Need part #'s for the front main seal and oil pan and ideas for powersteering
Well I'm pretty sure my front main motor seal is shot (its weeping and seems to be leaking more lately). Also my oil pan gasket is weeping too, is there an actual gasket there or would I just use some RTV copper gasket maker? How hard is it to get the oil pan off? Seems to me that there very little room to work with. Anyways what are the cummins part #'s for the front main engine seal and the oil pan gasket?
Also I'm pretty sure my powersteering box is toast, its full of fluid and the steering is now "armstrong steering". Where would be a good place to look for a new or rebuilt steering box? Are there any aftermarket companies that make this sort of thing?
Thanks

The crank seal number can be found here: http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Dowel_Pin/tab.htm
I've heard you have to "almost" pull the motor to replace the pan

stupid question but, how hard is it to replace the seal? Could I do it in my garage? Also I'm a little confused by those pic in the link, is the seal a big gasket for the gear cover or a seal that goes behind the crankshaft pulley?
please excuse my ignorance

Hey, no problem. I had no idea what the heck I was doing until I did mine. To just replace the seal, you dont have to take the timing cover off. The seal is just the part behind the crank pulley/vibration damper. I think replacing the seal would be pretty easy to do in a garage. You just have to take the belt, fan, and crank pulley off. The seal comes with instructions from Cummins also. Just make sure the surface is clean and dry when putting the new seal on and you should be fine. It probably would be a good idea just to pull the timing cover and do the KDP while youre at it, but thats a little bigger job.

Hey N.S.P, I looked at rebuilt p.s boxes for my truck a couple of years ago and the price just about floored me.I bought a rebuild kit from carquest and tore into mine and rebuilt it myself for 30 bucks.been working great since then. do yourself a favor and pull the timing cover and do the kdp while your in there. as for the pan gasket, the engine just about has to come out to replace it, or at least jacked up as far as it will go against the cowl.

Jim that site only lists pumps for the 2nd gens. Also, Timb, is carquest like an autoparts store like autozone or pepboys? I'm in Canada so we don't have a lot of the auto chains like you boys down south do
Could I get a rebuild kit for my powersteering box at Napa or the like?

Yes carquest is a chain, more similar to napa than autozone or advance. They sell some smaller stuff like rebuild kits for a ps pump. They also usually sell a lil bit better parts than the other more flashier advertised chains.

Howdy all,
Your power steering problem could well be your pump and not your steering box.Course I figured that out after changing the box...
Autozone had a lifetime Reman pump for $60.00 and change a couple years a ago when I needed one.
I found I was able to disconnect and remove the pump pretty easy...but don't forget a new "O" ring between the vacume pump and power steering pump.I have a couple layin' around here somewhere if you need one.
Also, there's a store on Ebay that sells Reman steering box's for around $200.00 which is way less than I found them around here in the parts stores.
