Fixinrams' vacuum pump repair kit, review.

I just wanted to give a review of the Fixinrams Vacuum Pump seal repair kit. The kit came complete with DVD, tools and two set of seals along with the Vacuum pump mounting gasket.

The DVD was top notch and easy to follow along while doing the pump repair.

This is not a quick repair for first timers. It took me around six hours doing the job myself, but I'm slow and careful.

The hardest parts of the job was getting to the bottom bolt where the vacuum pump mounts to the engine. Removing the wire harness mounting bolt near the top side of the oil pan will help in this area.

The top inboard bolt of the power steering pump can not be taken off without first removing the vacuum pump from the engine.

Everything else is pretty straight forward. Read his directions and watch the DVD before doing this project.

The best part of buying this kit is you can call Pete Gould anytime you have a question.

You can save the extra seals in case you ever have to do the job again or work a deal with someone who has a leaking pump.

Things to have before starting the job.

Plastic or rubber hammer.
Carb cleaner.
Two small wood shims.

Thanks for the review.
I think I'll have to tackle this job in the spring.
I think my truck has learned to "Mark Its Territory" from my '76 Harley.

If you're getting oil coming from the center section of the vaccum pump, this kit will fix the problem. Good luck, let me know if you have any questions?

The repair kit from Cummins is less than $10.00 and also comes with instructions. The only " special " tool you need is a large socket or a piece of pvc.

I agree with Mike. The Fixinram kit is great for first timers (it's stated purpose) or non professional mechanics. The Video is almost "Mr Rogers" like but covers everything, and having all extras tools/parts is very nice. Kit is a bargain compared to having a shop do it for you!

I watched the video with Diesel Dan (JD mechanic, now with FASS) and he was bored to death... but it spelled out all the steps... with do's & don't that I needed to feel confident.

Cummins Kit for the pros.... "Fixinram" for the rest of us. JMO

The only problem with the Cummins kit is that you don't get the double lipped seal the the Fixin Rams kit has which is really the key part of why the Fixin Ram kit seals up the shaft more often and with more success than the OEM Cummins kit. Fixin Rams will sell you just the required seals if you like.

I have to do the KDP repair on my 12V if I was going to do the Vacuum Pump seal kit in the future as well would it save any time to do it at once? B/c I would have the fan and clutch and such removed. My Vacuum pump is leaking but not a ton and I would save the $60 for the kit until later if it was just as much work to get at it alone as while I have it down for the KDP?

Thanks in advance

JT

J_T, You can save you $60 for the time being. I don't think you'll save yourself any extra time.

The last kit I used from Cummins had a double lipped seal. I also fixed my 2000 over 3 years ago with a single lipped seal made of Viton material instead of Nitrile, and it's not leaked since. I think the material it's made of is the key.
