Here's a repost of mine from a while back for someone else; may be relevant here:
There are high idle boxes out there; you can probably get them at most any diesel shop. I never did much checking into it, but I think they run about $170.00-$400.00. For a much less expensive alternative, if you're able and willing to get into a project involving work with electronics, here's some (read: a LOT of) interesting reading:

That's where I got ideas to base the high idler in my signature on. All told I spent less than $100.00 to build it, including the plugs to connect it to the APPS and factory harness so I didn't have to do any cutting or splicing on the factory wiring. If you need more info I'll try to dig it up for you.

I will run out of shovel handles, broom handles and all other sticks in my entire neighborhood (that can be used to prop the gas pedal), before I buy a $400 high idle box.

A higher idle, when idling for an extended period of time, helps prevent wet stacking. It keeps the cylinder temps hot enough to burn the diesel fuel completely. Wet stacking occurs when the fuel does not burn completely and washes down the cylinder walls. Another effect is deposits can form on the back side of the exhaust valves, which can cause the valves not to close all the way. This can result in the piston giving the exhaust valve a love tap. High idling in the colder months helps warm up the truck faster, and helps the A/C work to its full potential in warmer months.

I won't spend $400 on a high idle box either, maybe not even $100, but if I can make one for $20-30, I think it sure beats a stick.

I uploaded the photo, but it has to be approved first. As soon as it is I will post the pic here. I made a few changes to mine to get it to work, and they are reflected in my diagram.
