Excessive Rattle

Dont get me wrong, I love the sound of my cummins, however, it seems to rattle a little more than the average 1999 24 valve. I was wondering if it might be a cam posistion sensor or maybe a pump that causes it to be a little noisier than normal. Any suggestions?

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Don't get concerned. If you listen for a problem it will probablly come. Some say a qt of 2cycle oil in fuel will quite some. I'm not convinced.
Not a cam position sensor.
Listen to pump with length of hose to ear and other to various parts of engine. Drive your self nutz if can't pin down noise.

If you mean diesel clatter, the timing advance from the tuner box causes that.

When I sold my 12 Valve and got a 24 Valve, it took me a long time to stop manifesting that something was wrong with it. This engine shakes and rattles a lot more than my 12 valve ever did. Just took some getting used to. This might not be your issue though, but could you describe this sound a little more. Is it a knock, piston slap, or valve chatter? Does the sound change when the engine goes from cold to warm?

I have that........in my head thing. I swear I've got a specially bad valvetrain sound. But I can't find anything wrong. and another mechanic friend of mine swears its in my head. not that he can't hear the sound just that it's not a problem, its just the way it sounds I'm still very undecided. I'll do some more digging but I dunno.

Excess Rattle?

I just love the sound of the 24 valve Cummins,so tight.
'Minds me of Chicago's cover of the "I'm a Man" drum break.

I think the 99 is the 'rattliest' motor I've ever heard. It was -18 this week end and a guy came into the gas station where I was standing warming up and said"there is something wrong with your truck. It just started knocking and the motor is speeding up. I think it is going to blow."

I just laughed. It went into 3 cyl and it is really loud with the straight pipe when it is cold.

24 valves definitely can get your attention.
