engine swap computer issues

I am finally doing the swap in my 98.5 2500. i got a used 2001 engine with 100k on it from a well know junk yard.

problem is the ecm in my truck uses both a cam and crank signal, and the 2001 crank doesn't have a tone wheel for a sensor on it. so i looked into the wiring, and it seems like i can modify the harness to make it work IF i can find a 2001 ECM.

Has anyone ran into this before? advice?? thanks as always for any help

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Common screw up. You're not the first to get fubarred. It gets worse. The 2001 does not speak the same computer language. Some sensors are different. I mean beside the missing crank sensor!!! There is possibility the cam sprocket is toothed different between the years also.

the cam does have a different tone ring, but if im using the 01 cam gear and the 01 computer they should work correctly

i also see that the cummins bus is different between the years. if i was to use a matched harness and ecm along with the newer map sensor, would the ecm still talk to the pcm??
it looks as though the pcm pinout is the same between both years except for an a/c clutch relay output and a brake signal output.

what have others done to get around this issue?? anyone have any ideas???

Did you ever get this sorted out?? Thanks for posting it. I was about to buy an ECM/PCM pair on Ebay for an 01. I had completely forgotten about the differences between the '99 and the '01 sensors. You saved me some money and wasted effort!
