Engine Dies and wont start again
Thanks in advance for any help. I have a 2001 Ram 2500 24v. Pretty much everything on the truck is stock. I am having problems that I am not able to find any answers to after spending days searching through old threads.
I can start my truck and drive it around for a while. It does not seem to have any problems while driving around. The only thing I have noticed is it can sometimes not accelerate great. If I drive around for too long then my engine will just stop. When this happens I can restart it once, but as soon as i shift to reverse or drive it dies again. This same thing happens if I drive around for 2 minutes and then shut it off. Once I shut it off I cannot restart it no matter how long I had driven it for.
When it does this It seems to be fixed by bleeding out the injector lines. I open the 1, 3, and 4 lines and bleed it like normal till i get a healthy mess of fuel. After this the truck will start and drive fine, but then as soon as i shut it off the problem happens again. Even if it is off for 10 seconds it will not start backup. When I turn it off and it wont start back up usually the :wait to start light" does not come on.
Things I have done already:
Vp44 is only about 500 miles old.
100 miles on the lift pump (stock type replacement)
brand new in tank fuel sender.
brand new mapp sensor.
500 miles on the tps sensor
brand new fuel filter with brand new rubber ring.
brand new starter.
brand new air filter.
brand new abs control module
Brad new power steering pump
1 year old batteries. I have cleaned and checked connections on batteries.
I have checked all the ground wires I can find.
Truck has no codes. Is getting normal fuel pressure to vp44 and has a full tank of gas. My only thought is it is getting air into the gas lines somehow or the vp44 is bad already somehow. I have checked the fuel lines and cant find any leaks. I checked and tightened all the injector hold downs, the return and supply lines on the vp44, the banjo bolt on the fuel filter and on the lift pump. I am at a loss as to what to do with this truck, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, that is my thought. I was thinking of just replacing both lines. Have you heard of the T fitting on the return line letting enough air in to kill the engine? My only thought is I hit it when changing the vp44 and it is letting air in? Hard to get to that one to tighten it, but cant see any leaks or damage to it. I also thought that hitting that return line during vp44 change would usually just cause a hard start and not kill the engine entirely. Could any of these symptoms be cause by a timing issue when the new vp44 was installed if the key hole wasn't lined up right when it was put in?
That T at the back of the head is the worst design on this engine IMO! Mine leaked and caused a mess but didn't affect engine running at all IIRC. Diesel coated the undercarriage and coated the canopy rear window and tailgate...
I laid across the engine and got the fitting snugged up and invented some new cuss words and sore hands...I think it is a bypass line for return fuel and not sure if it affects pressure in the head rail, but it might allow a leak off....

You said, "Is getting normal fuel pressure to vp44". Do you have a gauge mounted that you're checking actual pressure while running, or just verified that it pushes fuel when you open the lines? If you have a gauge, where is it tapped into the system?
