drivetrain fluid capacities?
Anyone know the fluid capacities for the following?
'02 3500 4x4 --
-- gear oil in the NV5600 6spd transmission?
-- ATF in the NV241HD transfer case?
-- gear oil in the D60 front axle and D80 rear axle?
Got to change out the fluids and I'll be ordering expensive synthetics, and I'd like to know how much to order. Lost my tech manual and my new vehicle manual out west this summer. :
Thanks, Incanus
(Lots of changes on this site while I was away. You mean we're actually letting Ferd & Chebby owners play in our sandbox?

Re:drivetrain fluid capacities?
NV5600-9.5 pints
NV241HD-6.51 pints
Front axle D60-8.5 pints
Rear axle, 4x4, D80-9.5 pints if limited slip, 10.1 pints if not
All from the factory service manual.

I am looking at this same question and am looking for the answer to the amount of added oil is required for the NV5600. From what I have been told us owners of these trannys are supposed to add an additional liter due to lubrication problem for a bearing at the rear of the case.
You know not to use gear oil in the 5600 correct?
It takes a fluid from texaco that is much thinner, make sure the synthetic you are ordering is for the nv5600 specifically.
The nv5600 takes 5 qts, but if you can get 6 in it is better. The early cases didn't have an oil passage at the rear support so fluid doesn't circulate unless you go up a really steep grade. the extra qt ensures you get fluid over the top of the brace during normal operation.

Yes I knew about the synthetic oil. but questioned the amount. Parts man sent mechanic 4 qts until I questioned him and he called Chrysler....Now they are sending 2 more qts. Thanks for your help. This Mechanic has had my trans out 3 times now trying to get a new clutch installed properly
Well this mechanic did not take special care and now I have an oil spot on one of the mats. Sixlugs when this oil does get over the back wall does it fill up the cavity at the back or how does it circulate ? I was told by transmission rebuilder not to drive my truck until 2 more qts got added So mechanic is driving 15 miles to me so I dont void his clutch warranty...tomorrow I hope.
I'm new to this forum so I'm still on a learning curve here but I sure do like this website
Thanks All

No I didn't break down I just got to winter destination in AZ and I had been having problems badly at times with the 5th behind me of the clutch chattering when I took off so I took it in to have new clutch put in, flywheel the whole works and this is the nightmare this mechanic has caused. He blamed defective new pilot bearing and it just rolled on down hill from there. I am now disputing all charges made and going to try to get it back from CC company and then end up going to Chrysler dealer for probably everything being redone including rebuilt tranny. Mr Nice Guy is done being nice....He gave me the shaft and is blaming auto parts store for defective parts...NOT gonna happen if I can help it...Calling BBB tomorrow and maybe Attorney General of Arizona
The early 6-speeds didn't have the passage that the later ones did. Good rebuilds will have a couple 1/2" holes drilled thru the gusset to allow fluid thru to the rear bearing and 6th gear. Over filling will ensure you get a flow of fluid back there to slosh around and mix out.
I imagine many were driven without a 6th quart for many miles with no issues but the 6th qt is cheap insurance.
You can pull the shift tower and pour it straight in or jack it up on the drivers side or use some ramps to pour/pump it in thru the top pto bolt hole. If you pull the shifter make sure to not let the plastic cup on the shifter ball to fall into the trans!!

sizslug the tranny rebulder washed this trans to remove all filings and when mecnic got it back he only installed 4qts of oil. I have driven it 82 miles and don,t know how many the mechanic test drove it, with only 4 qts of oil in it after it got washed out. So did this rear bearing run dry for this amount of time ?
Hard to say. If your trans is of the newer casting, which you can only find out by pulling the tailshaft, it has the passage cast in.
The better shops know to drill them out if they don't have them, according to my trans guy.
I would definitely document the shortage of fluid in any way possible and use it in your defense to recover your expenses.
Sounds like you got a bum trans guy.
Heat is a problem for the nv5600, it runs hot, if you crawl under and check this out after a long haul, be careful, you can burn your hand. I imagine a 4 qt fill could have caused a lubrication issue and would call around and ask a few better shops for opinion on this.
maybe even start a thread asking specifically, some good trans guys on her may chime in.
