fluid types and capacities

Where to find fluid types, capacities, and where to find them for my truck. I like to research things in advance before buying so I can find the best deals. Owners manual is vauge about capacities and equivilant fluids.

I am looking for:

1. atf+4 besides chrysler type for transfer case.
2. NV5600 gear oil.
3. gear oil for 11.5 rear and front axle fluid.

Part of your research should be to review some recent threads in this forum to quench your thirst for knowledge. Here's three recent ones ...

I can't do much for equivalent types for ATF+4 as I used the stuff at the dealer. Pennzoil makes a fluid for the NV5600 as does Redline, but again I used the factory stuff. I used Mobil 1 75W90 in the front and rear differentials. Now for capacities:

1. Transfer case -- 4 pints = 2 quarts
2. NV5600 -- 9.5 pints = 4.75 quarts
3. Rear differential -- 7.65 pints = 3.825 quarts
4. Front differential -- 4.75 pints = 2.375 quarts

I'm sure these are not 100% exact, but this is what the service manual lists as capacities for each.

Thank You, Do you know the name of the pennzoil stuff.

After reading some of the threads above am I correct to assume:
I can use just about any fluid as long as it is synthetic in any one of the three questions I asked?

Be sure to plan for extra fluid capacity. For example T-Case calls for 2 qts, mine held 2.5 qts.

Pennzoil Synchromesh is the name of the fluid they make. I have no clue where to get it, though, that's why I went with the factory stuff.

All of the fluids for the transmission and differentials are synthetic, however I have no clue about the ATF+4. I just got what the dealer had as I was unable to find any good cross reference for it.

Thumbs down

after putting it off for way to long (31k) I changed my rear differential fluid this afternoon for the first time. I went to AutoZone and picked up 4qts of Mobil 1 Synthetic 75w-90. when I got home I pulled the cover and let it drain into a small clean drain bucket. the fluid was still warm and I let it drain for an hour. I even jacked up the front of the truck to make sure I got it all out. after cleaning and reinstalling the cover I filled it with 3.8qts of fluid.

here's where it gets funny. I dumped the extra 5oz of fluid into a different drain bucket so I would have 4 empty 1 qt bottles to drain the old fluid back into. I put 32oz in 3 of the bottles and only 5oz in the forth. that's only 3.15qts of fluid in a rear differential that requires 3.8qts. there were no leaks, the fluid was still fairly clean and the ring and pinion showed a normal wear pattern so I'm not to worried about anything.

is it that hard for dodge to put the correct amount of fluid in our trucks from the factory?
