Fluid Capacities G56 and diffs
Fluid Capacities G56 and diffs
I finally got around to changing all of my fluids today. It has been a very common question as of late on just how much everything holds since the Owners manuel is so helpful. Hope this helps out anybody that is getting ready to do theirs.
Front diff (AAM 9.25)= 3qts
Rear diff (AAM 11.25)= 4qts
G56= 6.75qts
Transfer case= 2.75qts
One thing that may be helpful in changing the tranny is a funnel with a long hose to be able to reach the fill plug. With a long hose you can run it by the downpipe and fill it up easily.

Amsoil has a $15 pump that's well worth the money for putting oil in tranny, rears, and transfer cases. Some guys don't buy it because you hardly ever have to change the oil in these driveline components but it's only $15 and saves you a ton of time leaving absolutely no mess. If you're running a GV with the 5k mi oil changes that entails it's must have imo.
I just changed the front and rear yesterday and can vouch for those numbers. The 9.5 took just under 3 quarts, and the 11.5 was a shade under 4 quarts. So, 7 total will get you there on the front and rear.
BTW my rear fluid looked terrible, like grey paint draining out of there. The front wasn't too bad. But I highly recommend everyone make sure and do the 15,000 mile service. Had I known how bad the rear was, I would have done it sooner (like maybe 7500 miles).

Thats what I was able to put in. I just wanted to put it out there for a baseline for people who are looking to change there fluids and not buying a lot of extra oil (or worse not enough).
By the way with 42K on the truck, my tranny and Xfer case ATF looked brand new when I drained it. The rear diff oil kinda looked like bighorns did, like greyish black paint. The Front diff oil was excellent through even with extensive use of 4x4. I dont know why in the hell dodge recommends 15K change interval but I didnt write the manual.

Those are good numbers to know. Ive searched for them myself and never seen them anywhere on here. Amsoil also has fluid capacities for everything under the sun on their website but I dont know how "hands on" accurate their info is. I ended up getting a case of Amsoil ATF for the TC, G56 and (eventually) power steering box. Should have a quart left over. You said your tranny and TC fluid were really clean, guess thats why the manaul says they are "filled for life". I know after I put the Amsoil in mine Im never changing them again. Just check them every now and again to make sure theyre full..
