drive shaft question

i was walking around my truck this morning and noticed that i had oil spots al over my tailgate and fenders so i crawled under the truck adn noticed oil splashed everywhere, adn not like dripping from parts just made things wet looking, i noticed that where the yoke comes out from the transfer case theres a lot of oil being flung into the under side of the cab. is this normal ?? i noticed it when i bought the truck and even my 1/2 ton chevy 4x4 had the same issue and it had an auto tranny and my dodge is got the 6-spd, ive never had any trouble with tranny issues and every time i get an oil cahnge i have the boxes checked front to back and everytime they check out full.

Sounds like the output seal on the transfer case is shot

I've never delt with one. some of them you can repair yourself if its an external one behind the drive flange. If it's internal the t case has to be torn apart.

IMO WAY to easy to pay a shop for. On mine I didn't even have to pull the driveshaft off the diff. Simply unbolt the centerbearing, and if it's like mine, there is enough movement in the slipshaft and u-joints to pull the yoke out of the transfer case.

Pry the old seal out, and tap a new one in. If you have the flat non-booted rear seal, a block of wood keeps it going in straight. If you have the goofy booted one (like mine) you'll need a BIG socket, or a pipe fitting to tap it in.

Clean up the yoke, slip it back in (I like to wipe a little grease to make it smoother) and bolt the center bearing back up.

I couldn't find the rear seal at the local parts store and had to order it from Dodge. The nv241hd is different-if you have a pto plate on your xcase, it's a hd xcase.

Oh, the $eal was pri$ey though.
