dreaded 53 block

i have a question. i have the numbers "53" stamped on the passenger side of my cummins motor. it is located to the right of the motor mounts right towards the front of the motor. do i have the dreaded "53" block that cracks easily. i was wondering who else has had this problem. nothing has gone wrong yet but the way i have heard about the dreaded "53" block is they are thin walled and crack very easily. i only have 67,000 miles on my truck so it is still under warranty. any advice would be helpful.
thank you!!!

thats exactly where I found my #53, so it looks like you are blessed as well.....numbers are about 3/4" tall and cast into the block.

I've been currious abouty this #53 casting as well, even though I don't perszonally know anyone who has had a problem with it.

Seems with all those trucks on the road you would hear about more of them if they were really a problem.

What year and model truck are those engines in guys?

Do a search you will find a lot on this subject.
The motors are under warranty for 100,000 miles and it does cover this. Here is a little to get you started.

Most people I know that work with these know about them. I personally know of 4 or 5 including my truck. Best I know they are in 1998, 1999, and some 2000 trucks. Certainly not all of these truck have them. If your truck is a grocery getter it probably will not crack. Also I am told that Cummins has a girdle that bolts under the pan to stiffen the block and prevent the crack. I have not checked that info.

thanks guys mine is a 2001 HO as well and i have the 53 block, same as you DR.EVIL. i am pretty sure my twins will pop the head real good and then put my stock turbo back on, take off all my boxes, take the injectors off, and then take it to a dodge dealer. make sure they can't tell about the soop ups.

They can probably tell anyway.. Besides, it's dishonest, don't you think?

Repeat: "I AM MY OWN WARRANTY STATION"

It's not worth losing sleep over the 53 block. Some crack, some don't. Deal with it when it happens. They seem to crack about the same whether stock or bombed, so don't let that deter you.

IOW, if it cracks, it was gong to crack anyway- it's most likely not from your BOMBS.

Yeah, I'm here, with my NEW block.
The bombs aren't what's gonna do it to you. It's the heavy towing. Mine didn't crack even after 100 or so runs down the quarter, but a week after towing my tractor over the largest mountain in the area, twice, I noticed an antifreeze odor, and then a leak, which got worse over time.
Note to those who have bombed. Thii just makes it harder. If you want to know more, PM me.

I wrote up my own "53" block FAQ just for this situation.

I just looked on the passanger side didn't see anything but a small letter B. I looked right behind the A/C compressor is that the spot it would be?

Ok I have ruled out that I have a 50 series engine( I looked all over the place and read all 8 pages of the TDR web page post to help me find it.) Ok so the good new is that I don't have a 53 but which engine do I have? My truck was made in October 2000.
