Doing my first oil change, Royal Purple
Royal Purple For Me
ive been using it for almost 4 years in my truck now, and we have been using it for just over 13 years in everything. funny how some people change their oil. my father told me changing it hot was the best because of............etc, and his father did it, and his father's father did it, and so on and so forth. i always change it hot. my truck seems to take right at 12 quarts to fill it. i always fill it to just a tad over the line. ive always heard not to over fill, but ive never had any problems putting a little more than the full mark. but yeah, pull the plug, go have a couple of diet millers, and come back and all is well

This applies to 98's...not sure if it's true for our 02's or not but - half way between 'Low' and 'Max' on the dip stick = Full!
See note at bottom...here....

Welcome to the DTR!
Poyal Purple products are a step up from 'National' brands.... but I would only use it if it's rated for AFT+4, which I did not think they had?? This assumes you have an Auto?
Fill in your Signature... under User CP.... so we know more about your truck.
I personally like synthetics in a all stock trannys. Extra heat protection against all that torque.

mine reads correct
thanks for the info RowJ, i never thought about that, but mine reads correctly. also, whitediesel01, i ran RP ATF in my ole 99 3/4 ton ford. i thought they made ATF for our dodge trannies.
I checked Royal Purple's web site... closest I could find was "Max ATF". Rated only for Mercon 6 and Dexron III. Would work in my DTT but not, IMO, in Stock tranny!

Tex,
The factory manual, Cummins suppliment, suggests to warm the truck to at least 140°F before changing. That's good enough for me! Another point of interest, buy your oil in the 1 gallon containers if possible, you will use all of 3 gallons. I have a '98.5 24 valve and it always uses 12 qts with a filter change, 3/4 up the "safe" area on the dipstick. 2007.5 6.7 six-speed auto uses the same amount. Also the 2007 owners manual finallly says that the engine will require 12 qts. witha filter change.
Something that should be mentioned to a first time diesel guy is be sure to fill that oil filter before you put it on, and don't throttle the truck at all on start up until your guage shows oil pressure. If you don't fill the filter and rev the truck you can easily damage the turbo bearings. This is a "normal" problem with all turbocharged vehicles, but sometimes we forget that it can be, "new to you", and don't mention it.
