Is it difficult to change the thermostat?
Is it difficult to change the thermostat?
Diesel Gods,
Is it difficult to change the thermostat on the 2002? It takes a while for my engine to warm up. I noticed several guys have had the same issue. Some guys have talked about the leg of the thermostat breaking. Thanks. 8)
Re:Is it difficult to change the thermostat?
I am not for sure on the 2002. My 99 was simple. I had to add a little coolant, but it was easy. Make sure you get a cummins part. Auto Zone seems to have problems with the replacement parts.

The thermostat is designed to break in the open posistion.

Loosen radiator cap, take out the 3 bolts holding stat in and your halfway finished. Part number I believe is 3954194 at your cummins dealer.
Re:Is it difficult to change the thermostat?
REMOVE THE THREE BOLTS. HAS A 0-RING FOR A SEAL.
I LOST VERY LITTLE COOLANT ON MY 99. DEALER LOW
PRICE WAS AROUND $15.00. MAY BE HIGHER WHERE YOU GO

Mine sits warming up for 5 minutes after being pluged in for 3 hrs. still have to get about 3~4 miles down the road before the gauge will move.

Sounds normal Dan. I'm 2 miles from the interstate, and it takes me 5 miles at 65 once I get on for the needle to reach full operating temps. I recently took the back roads to get to work, and at it took forever at 0[sup]o[/sup] to get up to temp at slower speeds and rpm.

I wouldn't touch the thermostat, instead buy some engine covers to block some of the cold air entering the engine compartment!
Re:Is it difficult to change the thermostat?
Ditto the broken leg. One for my 99 was $17.88 at Cummins. #3944194 180 deg. Seal was not a true O-Ring but rather a molded seal that surrounds the outer edge of the stat.
