Diesel Surge

I have a 98.5 RAM (24V), A/T, with 85K miles. Recently it started to surge around 45 mph. Transmission oil at correct level. No DTC's or MIL. I determined that it was the failure of the TCC to go into lock-up. I hooked my laptop to the PCM/TCC line and monitored the output. At or about 45 mph the line would go low briefly then go back high. If I maintained a light load on the throttle it would continue to surge. If I forced the line low, (with a switch) the TCC would lock-up and function normally. Of course it would unlock if I opened the switch (line returned high). It would occur in or out of OD.

I did a continuity check on the APPS and didn't see anything abnormal on the DVM. I'm going to dig out my old Simson meter and try again but have been told that if it were the APPS, there probably would be other problems. ?? No other problems and no DTC's.

I should mention that I have a BD Brake with Auto-Loc and a BD Pressure-Loc. The Auto-Loc will not not lock in the on position, i.e. the brake butter-fly works but the tranny doesn't lock-up. The Pressure-Loc seems to be working.

Ideas-Suggestions?

Problem resolved. Had the BD eqipment checked. It was OK. Took it to a Dodge dealer who was not prejudiced against after market mods. They reflashed the PCM and set a new shift point. Running great. Hope this helps someone with similar problems.

I was using a Radio Shack DVM catalog # 22-812. It has an RS-232 interface and comes with the software on CD. I think it costs about $60. If you want something more comprehensive, check out www.autotap.com. It's quite a bit more expensive but gives you a lot more info.

Did a bit of research, auterraweb (www.auterraweb.com) makes one that seems a bit better/flexable.

Sent an e-mail off to see if Cummins parameters are covered by this software.

Would that be an automatic thing for these hookups??? Is a throttle position sensor (or others for that matter) for a gasser picked up the same for a rattler??

I'd hate to spend $2-3 c notes US only to have Cummins parameters left out.

For those interested, here's the response I got from auterraweb. Not very promising.

Our scan tool supports these parameters:

http://www.auterraweb.com/supsen.html

There are no special Dodge Ram parameters supported.

I'm no expert on the codes/parameters but these seem to be leaning towards a gasser. Comments anyone??

autoenginuity.com looked good at first. They were forthright in saying on their FAQ page........

What vehicles does the ScanTool or SpeedTracer not work with?

The EPA has listed the 2000 Nissan Maxima and Altima as non-compliant because of a hybrid protocol implementation and they will not connect. BMW M3/M5/Z8 2001-2004 are not compliant and the EPA is looking into this currently. The Volvo V70 will connect but show no information. We will connect to the Duramax, Cummings, and Powerstroke diesel vehicles; however, because their gross vehicle exceeds the maximum requirements of the OBDII standard, they are not OBDII compliant and very limited data or sensors will report with generic OBDII. However, with the Ford enhanced interface, 1996 and newer Powerstrokes and all F250 - 450 Super Duties, all the Ford proprietary powertrain sensors are available (150+). Also, with the GM enhanced interface, the Duramaxes' entire powertrain sensor list are available (150+). Contact us for a list of sensors.

Last one to look at for now is "Auto Tap" www.autotap.com

They offer scanners for full size rigs (semies) Maybe they have the GVW/OBD II issue worked out and can offer Ram/Cummins owners something. I see there is an upgrade for Chrysler offered.

Maybe.....
