Death wobble?????????????
Death wobble?????????????
I just traded my 93 for a 98.5 Cummins. I have the death wobble so tonight I changed out the track bar and still no fix. What do I check for now. These are things I have found: Left bottom ball joint is fairly new and no movement on left side of truck, right side of truck has very little movement up and down, the truck pulls to the right hard, rotors are grooved and the tires are choppy on the left inside and the right outside. So with that being said I think I will replace all ball joints, rotors and tires. Will changing all of these parts fix my death wobble. Oh yeah the tires are also shot someone ran to much air pressure in them.
just changing the ball joints is a no-no. you have to first get an alignment then measure how far off the camber is and get the correct offset balljoints. also rebalance the tires and get new rotors(major pita), if its a 4x4 truck, if your gonna do rotors u should also do the driveshaft u joints cauz your 3/4 there anyway.
There's so many parts in the front-end it's hard to say. Best bet is to have someone slightly turn the steering wheel left and right while you check underneath the truck. Look for anything that has play in it. Jack up your front wheels, grab the top and bottom and see if you get play. If so, you're wheel hubs are shot. I'd eventually try to replace everything up front. This includes:
Tie rod ends
Sway bar and end link bushings
Track bar
Control Arm bushings
Ball joints and U-joints
Wheels hubs
etc.

New to the game here, but in reading about these trucks I have heard that worn Shocks can be an often overlooked culprit for DW. Like I said, I am new to this and just bought my first Diesel, so I may just be talking out of my butt. I think all Diesels (any make) pretty much eat up front end parts on a regular basis due to the excessive weight of the engine and truck.
dont count on the shocks being the culprit, my truck eats a set of tires every 2 years.like i said before from experience, do it all once cheaply, while everthing is apart allready, id even go so far as getting new hubs. but thats me.if u r paying for it get it all done in 1 shot, much cheaper and less frustrating.
I had the DW with a strong pull to one side on my 2002 and it WAS the shocks. Or at least the shocks were included in the problem.
Changed:
Track bar -- no change
alignment and ball joints -- no change
shocks -- DW gone
New tires -- pull to the left gone
