Dead VP-44
So yesterday, one of my good buddy's was driving his '99 CTD home from work when it shut down all of the sudden. He restarted it, but it only ran real rough at about 400 to 500 rpm; with NO "check engine" light. Today he dis-connected the Banks (yeah I know), checked all of the wiring and battery cables. But now it won't even start. He check for and has plenty of fuel up at the Fuel filter canister; so the FASS is operating as normal. He then checked for codes; P1688 and the wording "Aux in / Aux out" shows up.
After a bit of searching here on DTR, I conclude his VP-44 is toast.
Is my conclusion accurate?
If so, we're gonna do the swap ourselves. I found some really good instructions here on DTR's Tech Facts. Where is a good place to get a quality rebuilt VP-44?

Mine had similiar issues with a 1693 code. I replaced the crank shaft position sensor as it would fire when turning over as per Autozone code and the Cummings shop in Bloomington IL. So I drove up to MI to pull a trailer back and then it just died, and would not start. I didn't pull the 216 code, but 2 others which was (or specualted the electronics craped out).
Anyway, I bought mine from Midwest Fuel Injection and they supposedly replace all of the lectronics and any updates from Bosh, steel sleeve, etc. The pump runs fine now and pulled a 10K trailer back. They were very good in the customer service area and only $1040 witha $60 overnight charge. I didn't have the time to wait for a Blue Chip, so in the next couple hundred thousand miles, I'll let you know.
