Is a Dana 70 a Dana 70?

I have an opportunity to get a limited slip carrier from a Dana 70 that was in an 85 Ford pickup. Will it be the same thing as the Dana 70 in my 99 Dodge?

Also, does anyone know where to get rebuild kits for one of these limited slip units?

What is an 85 Dana 70 LS unit worth, if it needs to be rebuilt, or not?

I assume if I put a different carrier in my rear I will have to go through the complete setup of the rear. Is this correct?

Last thing, does anyone know why there does not appear to be a Detroit Locker available for a Dana 70?

Thanks,
Chris

Chris...I by no means an expert in differentials, however, I'll try to share some information that will steer you in the right direction, or at least confuse you more! ??? A dana 70 is a dana 70. Having said that, #1. the dodge and ford, have different gearing. #2. you would have to change the ring & pinion sets, to be compatiable to your present gearing or to another which is for a dodge. #3. If you change the gearing different in your present set-up, and have 4x4, you will also have to change the front differential. #4. Since the fords and Dodges gear ratios are different, I would assume the limited slip carrier would be different also???? You want to consider going to an ARB or Detroit Locker system instead.

A resourse would be: www.4wheelparts.com

hope this helps?

Steve

P.S. The 4wheelparts catalog lists a Detroit Locker for a 32 spl, ratios 4.10 & down- Dana 70, #DET 225sl-107D. I don't know if this will match-up with your truck?

Re:Is a Dana 70 a Dana 70?

What I get on this carrier, is it comes with factory 3.54 ring and pinion which is same as my truck. From my research on Dana axles, they seem to come in standard gears, which are not decided by the manufacturers (I didn't see 3.54 - Ford, 3.54 - Dodge in the gear ratio offerings)

If I get it I plan to remove the existing gears and replace with my current gears, effectivley only replacing the carrier in the rear.

I was thinking about aftermarket stuff, like a Detroit Locker or one of their other offerings, but they'd be much more expensive than this. Currently I can get the carrier for around 100.00, but I don't know if it's worth the risk since it may need rebuilding because it is 18 years old with who knows how many miles on it. (we know it hasn't been over-powered ;D )

Thanks,
Chris

Normal wear and tear would dictate rebuild. By the time that is accomplished, would you be ahead to buy a new Detroit, and set it up w/your gears? Or at least not too far behind ???
This is assuming that you would be comfortable w/a Detroit. Some are not, and should not.
Project sounds iffy to me, but its your $$

Good luck.

Depending on the year of your dodge it could be part 70/80 (the diff. is 70, the axle housings/shafts 80s) also the splines designed differently. Also your Ford is a Dana 70-U1 ( "U" for under-sized bearings), a weaker axle than a standard 70 or 70HD, Also if it's a dually it has 1.5" diameter 35-spline shafts.
There should be many limited slips/lockers available.

P.S. if you have any more questions just ask.

Re:Is a Dana 70 a Dana 70?

In 93 with 60k on my 91 W350 the almighty LSD kindly dropped all it's clutch pack material into the diff oil effectively finnshing off the crown bearings. DC would not pay so I spent the extra $$$$ on the 70 HD locker carrier complete and never looked back. DL's are a little more notchy to drive but will not decide when to work and use no additives. Had one in a 90 Pete in the back diff and it has never been touched in 13 years still works always. PK

OK, nevermind, I'm not gonna touch the LS unit. It just isn't worth the possible differences I could run into and I'd rather pay for new than deal with the hassle of the LS unit.
Now I'm researching a locker unit. I'll post about that in High Perf forum though.

Keith, if I can believe Fritz's page, the 70 should have 35 spline axles, but thanks for the info.

Thanks for all the replies,
