I just went through the same thing. My cruise would not light on the dash. I replaced my clock spring, no help. I replaced my on/off switch, no help. Finally I took it to the dealer and asked them to fix it. They said they couldn't find anything, but they checked all the connections and it miraculously started working. Took a 1600 mile trip and worked flawless till the last 200 miles coming home. Took it back to them and told them to check the brake light switch (which I should have done!!) They said they looked at it, but I don't think they did, but it has been working ever since. I did look in the Haynes manual and there is a speed control circuit on the brake light switch and that was the code I was getting 1595 I think. The switch is about $13 at Auto Zone. Try replacing that before the clock spring or anything else. Its the cheapest.
Like I said....my brake switch didn't get replaced, but they must have done something or found something cause it works now and they won't admit what they did....gotta love the Dealers...

Brake light switch

Thanks for the help. Photos are especially helpful. Is the brake light switch above the brake pedal on my '99 2500?

Should be between the pedal and the "kick panel" just below the steering shaft. It has a button that presses against pedal stem.

The brake lite switches have three sets of contacts in them. One for the brake lites and two sets for the cruise. One set allows the cruise to be engaged the other set disengages it. The internals on these switches are very cheap and the contacts soon oxidize causing problems. Replacing one is a cheap first step in troubleshooting and if it was not defective it soon would be.

Thanks busboy, I think I that is where I will start with it. I didn't even think of the brake switch wearing out. Checked the vacuum hoses a few minutes ago as far as I am able to. They looked great and all the hoses seem to be tight. That's why these forums are so great for a rookie like myself.
