Crazy? My own tranny build

Am I nuts for even thinking of this? Maybe, maybe not. Has anyone here ever built their own transmission from specific parts choices? With enough research, I'm sure the parts used can be found. I have a relative who rebuilds transmissions on a daily basis, so I'm sure he's physically capable of assembling one. Hell, I rebuild rotor heads for Army helicopters; kind of important, don't you think? I'm sure I could assemble a tranny, too. It's not like the top builders were born with their experience. They had to start somewhere. The parts are the key here. Converter, valve body, clutch bands, planetary gears, and input shaft. I know there's some voodoo that each builder does, but how much of this is truly secret? I have no clue, but I'm looking into it. Just brainstorming here...

First see if you can get a service manual or rebuild manual. It will sure help with the decision to proceed or not. I did a Ford C-6 but I bought a master rebuild kit and an aftermarket manual. It was more that a 1 day job.

I looked into the DTT kit, and I really liked what I saw. I could get the whole kit with a billet input shaft for less than $3000. I have another vehicle, so taking my time won't be bad at all. A service manual would definitely make the whole process easier. If I can navigate an aircraft maintenance manual, I'm sure it won't be too hard to figure out.
