crank sensor

Guys while driving truck today it bucked a few times, then went on down the road fine other then the CEL was on. Checked with Smarty for codes, show code for crank position sensor. Cleared code truck is running fine, going to change out sensor to be on safe side. Is there anything special I need to look out for when i change it, or anything else I should do. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Depending on how many miles you have on the truck, you might want to consider rebuilding the starter while it's out. I put bigger starter contacts in mine.

Did either of you guys have a intermittent problem with the sensor or did your truck just quit running.

Be gentle pulling the old one out. It has an o-ring on it can be a real pain getting them out. May have to spray some lube up around it and let it set.

Mine never completly quit, it would cause the tach to quit and go into limp mode for a short distance and the check engine light would stay lighted up for a few starts then it would go away. I was afraid mine would quit so I ordered the new one from Rock Auto and got her done.

I was seeing the tach jump a bit, figured I would replace it before any problems happened. Kept the old one as a spare, still looked good.

I had intermittent tach and CEL, but no loss of power or fuel pressure (I've heard its supposed to shut down the lift pump if no info from the crank sensor). Be careful taking the old sensor out, it easily breaks. Lots of lube and gently prying with the screw driver will get it out. Don't forget to oil the o-ring before putting the new one in... mine took about 3 hours to do, start to finish...

Good luck!!!

That is sort of weird. Every time I've come across crank sensors being out, the truck will not start, up until last week. GMC C5500 running bad and the comp. said crank sensor, changed it and it ran fine.

But like what was said before, watch yankin on it too much, they like to break off in the motor, spray it down real good and twist it gently out, don't try pullin and prying too much
