crank sensor?

It started yesterday when I romped on the truck after putting my new intercooler boots on; check engine light. Code was for the crank position sensor. I cleared the code and it came back the next day. What should I check for? What does it mean?

Truck still runs fine.

What # code came up? The crank sensor is located on the drivers side of the engine behind the starter. You must drop the starter to remove it.

Yeah i had this trouble not even a month after i got my truck from the dealer, but 4 days past the warranty date. Took me about a half hour or so because the starter motor bolts were so tight and they're kinda hard to get too. I finally had to use a think if i remember right a 1/2 breaker bar with about a foot and a half of extensions to get enough leverage to loosen the bolt on the back side. Then it's the simple matter of dropping the starter popping out the sensor and putting in the new one and putting the starter back up in there, you might want an extra set of hands to either start the bolts or hold the starter just because it gets pretty heavy trying to do both. My fiance's dad held the starter for me so i could wiggle my arm around the starter to start the back bolt. Other than that it wasn't to tough and wasn't that badly priced i picked one up from Oreiley for like $46 i think about a year ago. As long as you have a couple 12 point sockets a set of extensions and maybe a universal joint, it's pretty simple and easy.

Make sure you check the end of the old sensor. If it is chewed up you may have a loose tone ring inside the motor. It's bolted to the crankshaft. It's rare but it does happen. You can see it with a flashlite and small mirror looking thru the hole.

I think I would rather do a crank sensor than a cam sensor on these trucks.

Hey Bentwings, If the tone ring is loose, then what drop the oil pan and tighten it back up??

I clear the code with the smarty and every things fine until I tow, then it pops up again. Could something else cause this? An adjustment?

yeah mine used to come on and off all the time. Then after about 2 weeks it finally came on and stayed on. Then we reset it and the very next day it came on again, so we checked and it came up as the Crankshaft position sensor, so then i decided to get it replacement.
