Coolant Use????????

Hey Guys,

I need some reassurance here.

I have a 2002 cummins. Since I bought it new I have had to add coolant twice. This last time the overflow bottle was completely empty. Is this normal?

Re:Coolant Use????????

Coolant will be lost through evaporation. Mine has never run out but I have added coolant to my 01 twice since it was purchased in 2000. I changed my coolant two weeks ago to the new extended service Fleetguard. So far, the bottle has stayed where I filled it. One thing I did different this time after changing the coolant was allowing the engine to run and continuing to add fluid through the radiator cap as the level dropped. It took about 15 minutes before the level stabilized. Then I filled to bottle to the line and sealed eveything up.

either check your cap (radator) or just replace it...Next preasure check your system hot then cold if the problem persist.

Re:Coolant Use????????

When I first got my truck I had about 3/4's of the overflow bottle worth of coolant mysteriously disapear.

Topped it off (to the line, not the top of the bottle) and it has stayed there since.

Must have been leaking somewhere, but as all the parts mated better over time it stopped.

(is this a different truck than in your sig? it says 2003)

Re:Coolant Use????????

I had the same experience as Phox. I got nervous, and posted asking about this, and was told since my truck was fairly new when it happened to me, that possibly it was just an air pocket in the cab heater lines, and I was told to run the heater in HIGH for a bit, top off the resevoir bottle, and then keep my eyes on the bottle to see if the level dropped again. It didn't.

Re:Coolant Use????????

there were two drops of coolant on my driveway... and my reserve tank drops at a decent rate (top line to bottom line in a few weeks)

everything is bone dry and the system holds preasure for hours... its weird

Might want to check around your freeze plugs etc. My wife's Mustang has one with a slow weep.
