Cool down exhaust temps?

Cool down exhaust temps?

I hear and read from other threads to let the temps get down to 400 degrees as a safe mark. Well, on my CTD, its always at 300 degrees as soon as I pull into my driveway regardless of what I may have done right before I pulled in. Should I just shut it down right away or let it run a minute or two. Does it matter?

300 degrees is plenty cool. As long as mine gets under 400, thats when I shut it down... It would take my truck 10 min to get 300 no matter what.. Where do you have your probe installed, pre or post turbo?

Sounds like you got it post-turbo. The 400 applies to pre-turbo. Unless your gauge is messes up, I don't see how you can read 300 pre-turbo right after you drive it. Mine won't go below 425 if the truck is idling in D.

I normally let mine (pre turbo probe) idle until it reaches 350°F. Even if my gauge is reading 350° or less I will let it idle at least 15 seconds, just to be certain that the manifold isn't hotter than the exhaust gas and to avoid heat soak.

Letting the engine idle for a moment, helps cool the turbo, if shut down after a hard hot run the heat from the turbo "cooks the oil" in the bearings, causing all kinds of issues, usually premature turbo failure. IMO another good reason to use syn oil as it handles high temps without boiling off/breaking down

My probe is mounted pre-turbo and I let it cool down to 300 before I turn off the motor. It usually cools off really fast, about a minute or two if I am not towing anything. I usually take it easy before I reach my parking spot to help this out.

I think if you are running syn. oil, this will also help fight bearing coking problems, allow the engine to cool down faster and run a little bit cooler.

I did a search. My EGT sensor is pre turbo and in the desired location. So I'm still getting that 300 degree temp reading either from a short drive to the supermarket or pulling a loaded dump trailer. Just let it run for a few minutes regardless. Its running cool enough.
