Turbo cool down temps
Turbo cool down temps
I'm sure this has been talked about to death but I have already done a search on the topic and I still have a few questions.
1. Are you guys getting aftermarket guages to measure the turbo temp? Any recommendations?
2. Do those timers work with the built in alarm system for shutting down the engine?
3. If I run synthetics will my cool down times be less? ( my truck is brand new so I know I have to wait 10 or 15k miles before I switch) and does the engine oil provide the oil to the turbo or is that a seperate resevoir (sp?) or something.
4. How critical is it that I cool it down every timeso I don't cause damage? Most of my driving will be 5 to 15 minute trips between job sites with slow to moderate speeds and very little hauling if any. I live in an Arizona desert climate if that makes a difference.
I am kind of always in a hurry and I feel uncomfortable having to let it idle for theft and other reasons. I had a dodge turbo car as a kid and I remember ruining the turbo (smoked quite a bit) and having to have it replaced (not cheap) and I was never aware of having to have it cool down so I am sure that must have played a part in its early demise.
Thanks for any replies and please post links if you have them.
Randy.

Re:Turbo cool down temps
i have gauges on my 03 HO...my daily drive takes me down the highway20 miles and by the time i turn off to go to the house and go the 4 blocks home mine has already cooled to 300F..unless I'm pulling heavy and haven been running full out...i dont worry about it, they cool off fast..wouldnt want to roll down the highway and pull over to the shoulder and just shut it off..but even a very short drive at light throttle will cool mine right down...clean oil..synthetic or otherwise..is your turbos best friend
Re:Turbo cool down temps
Mine's usually cooled to 300 degrees by the time I park but sometimes it's still at 350 or so even though I think I've babied it enough to get it lower. And, at interstate rest areas or other similar stops, you can only guess the temp if you don't have a gauge. Gauges are a good thing. Use post turbo if all you're worried about is cooldown. Pre-turbo is mostly for bombing.
