Codes????

I ran the codes on my 2002 2500 and they read as follows:

PPCU ------ P0500 ------ P1693

PECU ------ P1693 ------ P0216

Can anyone tell me where to find out what these mean or just explain their meaning to me.....

Thanks,

J.R.

P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction
P0216 Injection Timing Control Circuit Malfunction - This usually means the VP44 is shot. Have you tried to reset them and see if they come back?

First line is codes in the PCM, Dodge computer.

0500 is the speed sensor, if your speedometer is working, and you don't have ABS/Brake lights on all the time, then you most likely spun the rear wheels recently, it will go away after X number of engine starts with the problem non existent.

1693 is the code saying that the other computer has a code.

2nd line is the ECM, Cummins computer.

P0216 Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure,
this code is one you do not want to see, it usually means imminent failure of the injection pump (VP44).
It also has been known to be thrown if your lift pump is on it's last legs.
2002 should have warranty left, both the lift pump and injection pump are covered for 5 years (or 7 if you have a late model 2002) or 100,000 miles.

Thanks for the info guys, I replaced the lp a couple of months ago, throttle petal is at times minimally responsive and the truck has 130,000 miles on it, so much for the warranty.

I guess it's time to bite the big one, any ideas on where to get a vp44 and can I install it myself?

I bought some new tires (rear only) and later found out that they had put on 285's instead of 265's, could that be the result of the speedometer code?

I will clear the codes and see if the 0216 reappears.

As Phox said, you still have warranty left on your 02.....don't bother replacing the VP yourself if this is the case - it is an expensive endeavor. Hate to say it but if you are experiencing the "dead pedal" and you have the 0216 DTC, the VP is getting ready to pack it in for good. Get to the dealer before it leaves you stranded somewhere.

Will the VP44 ALWAYS through a code P0216 when it goes bad?

Also, does the CEL always come on, or just when the electronics fail?

Interesting question. Mine never displayed it in the odometer on it's own (if I did, I must have missed it). I only knew to look after I got the dead pedal routine two or three times.

I think the answer is NO, but I would also imagine that a dealer will only replace the VP withthe 0216 present. At least, they told me they ALWAYS replace once the 0216 is thrown. (still covered, thank God).

Man, buck30 on an '02? That's some runnnin. I have 73,000 on my '01.

No, and no.

Never had a Check Engine Light, never had any codes, VP44 just gradually died.
This started at 3,500 miles and got replaced at 4,000 miles.

If I had to guess (which I guess I do), I'd say it was something internal, as you'd think the electronics would throw a code.

Sorry to hear about the P0216 error code.

I've heard some have had the error code from other reasons. (bad lift pump, fuel filter plugged up)... This is a small chance that you can resolve this and keep you VP44 for any length of time. Usually once they throw the code they are DONE. You might try to reset the code and see if it comes back right away...

codes

Mine has always had a dead pedel ment nothing to the dollarships and cumins: ( revs and screams like a Jimmy but no power.) Ment nothing to them.
As for "Warranty work" they always seem to find. Nothing found at this time. Was their paper work answer for "Customers Complaint" So I always had to pay for warranty work.( not done)

It still revs and screams but stillllllll very low on power. I hate to be in front of a gas job pulling a 22' 5th wheel. SORRY but it is floooored.
The other day the dollarship told me that the P-1693 ment that the one not storing a cimpanion code would be bad . (Funny that they didn't know that years ago when they could have fixed it under warranty.)
When I get more money shal be able to continue!!!!!

I'm in the same boat. http://www.metrosvc.com/VP44.htm is the best deal I've found. They include shipping both ways and there's no up front core charge. Includes updated case, new PSU and replacement of all worn internal parts. If you're mechanically inclined, yes, you can install it yourself.
