Codes 1689 & 1690
Hi folks, couple of weeks ago, I started up my pickup to let it warm-up. I came out of the house a few minutes later, and it was "rattling". My first thought it had somehow run out of oil.....
The check engine light was on when I got in. I stepped on the accelerator, and the idle smoothed out. I drove it to work and shut it off. Mid afternoon, it wouldn't start. Cranked over really nice, but no start.
A few days later, when I finally got time to look at it, (and let it warm up a bit outside), I discovered the fuel tank was empty (guage still registered 1/4 tank). Got fuel in it, and took cap off fuel filter housing. Lift pump wasn't running (Glacier inline kit 2 years ago). Found out, no current coming through the factory lift pump wiring harness, that connects to the glacier pumps relay system. I bypassed the relay, and the pump started to work, and I got the pickup running. However, I have since run a couple of wires into the cab, with a toggle switch to turn the pump on/off as I need.
I got a scanner, and found the following codes:
P0500 (wheel spin....icey conditions, not too concerned about this one)
P1689 and P1690 are the two that have me wondering/worried. Could these two be not letting current through to the lift pump system?
I haven't the time or place right now to work on this myself. My boss has all his Dodge diesel work done at a Chrysler dealership in Sidney, MT, and trusts them. I'm thinking I'll have to get my pickup over there for them to look into it, unless you folks think I could just erase the codes and that will solve it? Only other thing I can think of, it would "shudder" under load, if I was doing a real slow acceleration. I replaced the fuel filter yesterday, and that seems to have fixed the shuddering.
Thanks in advance. Really not looking forward to replacing the injection pump, and a service shop told me both those codes had to deal with the injection pump.

1688 through 1691 generally mean a failure in the electronics package on the VP-44 IP. Model years 1999 and 2001 both had packages that were made with substandard components without enough protection from thermal cycling. So, yes - time to replace the IP.
Make sure the rebuilder follows Bosch-certified procedures and will guarantee that the mechanical and electronic components of your new pump fit post-2004 Bosch specifications.

Thanks Jimmy, and Gear Poet. I'm hoping tomorrow to erase the codes, and see if the liftpump circuit kicks back in again. Then, I'll have to figure out what to do from there.
