Keep in mind, many off the shelf code readers don't handle our dual computer system very well, and won't tell you much more than the key on/off method.

If you have a 98 or 99, then of course, the key on/off method won't work anyway.

True enough... I got mine from Sears for about $150. It not only gives the codes, but give the simple diffenition of each code. It's an Actron, I beleive..

So which one do you all recommend? What should I expect to put out on one?
TIA.

As for brands, I don't know enough about the different ones. I do like the Actron I have. Look for one that not only says the code, but gives the diffenition and one that will clear the code. I'd think about $100 to $200...

I had a friend who bought one of the Cornwell truck for around $150-$175 I think and he has used the heck out of it. That way he can find the code and then call me and say....."what's this P0440 mean" and such. Oh what you do for good friends!! Oh yeah and his when reading my 1693/216 would only show the p0216 like it was only reading the ECU but I don't know. It did not show the P1693.

Well I got a scanner, and of course the code it brought up was P0216.
Time for a VP44. Guess I am a member now.

Don't know if you guys know about it or not, but on the 2001 Dodge Truck you can turn the ignition switch on, off, on, off three times and the codes will come up in the odometer. You can't clear them or if you can I don't know about it, but if it's throwing a code it will show.
