code scanner
You only need a code reader for '98 & '99 trucks, just follow the instructions here- http://dodgeram.org/tech/gas/Trouble/pcm_fault_code.htm
When they tell you .you do not need them that is there personal preferance. Sure you can do the ingnition on off thing and count light flashes, if that is all you desire. And you can buy a "code reader" very cheap. But I would preferr to get a Scan tool, that does code reading and diagnostic's also. There a little more money then a "code reader", but they can do so much it is worth it. You have the option of looking at each and every sensor, checking it's function and reading it in real time. There is a welth of information at your dispossal, engine temp, oil pressure, transmission funtions, barometric pressure, timing, the list is very long. But the point is for a little more, you can get a much more useable tool.
Several manufacturers sell good tools, two that come to mind are OTC and AutoXray. OTC has been around for a good 35 years and they were my choice for my first diagnostic scan tool. They have a nice system out now called the Monitor Elite Deluxe. AutoXray is a new comer, that sells very nice equipment, there 5000 and 6000 units are tops. I personaly am buying the ATX 6000. The bigest thing to look for nowdays is you want the scan tool to be CAN (Controller Area Network) compliant. Most no about OBD-I, and OBD-II, and these are important and what is being used now. But CAN is what is comming next (there are a few that use it now) it will be the mandated protocol for all vehicles in 2008. So you can see there will be alot of out-dated equipment soon. These new generation scan tools are fantastic, they come with software so you can down load the scan tool info into your computer for to produce grafts, log vehicle info for future comparison, or you can send your info to someplace (like cummins) for diagnostic review.
Botoom line is don't buy something that will not work later, and buy a tool that can do more then just read generic codes. Also a good tool, will read all or most makes, so your other cars/trucks will be covered.

I have the "OBDII Automotive Scan Tool and Virtual Dashboard" (http://www.obd-2.com/) also. I got the "TRICOM" so I could scan all the family and neighbors cars and trucks. I like the " Virtual Dashboard" and replay features with the "DATA" screen it comes in handy when making changes and then see how it affects things.
Alpine what data are you getting for your truck? I have a hit and miss with the "IAT and MAP". This only happens on my truck. I called Alex (the owner) and he gave me a few things to try. I'm just curious if anyone else has this problem with a Dodge truck.
The software works great on everything else and Alex is a great guy to work with. I hope it's just a setting I missed.
