The early 24 valve trucks don't do the key-on-off trick.
I think it started in late, late 99 into the 2000 year.
Mine doesn't work either.
But it did on my '90 1/2 ton gasser.

...........that isn't exactly what I was hoping to here!
Any suggestions on which reasonably priced OBDII code readers are best?.........I never paid much attention to them before because I have never had an OBDII vehicle that I have had to mess with.

Most major auto parts chain stores (PepBoys, Advance, Auto Zone etc) will pull & erase the codes they can retrieve for free.
The parts stores I've seen use the same one you can buy off the shelf in their store.
There are other codes that can only be pulled or cleared with a DRB tool like the dealer uses.
You can find them on Ebay sometimes.

I have that scanner from Crappy tire, but am returning it I want a scanner that will scan real time not just when a code is entered to the ecm. (when a code is entered it also stores the parameters that caused the code the scanner will then give a "freeze frame of the problem" helps to figure out at what speed, rpm etc the problem is occuring at.
