Clutch troubles?
Clutch troubles?
I think my clutch is going out or gone. My truck is a 1999 QC 4x4 Cummins 2500 4x4 5-speed.
I started having problems every now and then getting into gear. Any gear, not all the time either. Would do it if truck was running or not. Then today I actually was stuck at a stop sign for about 10 minutes trying to get my truck to move. Was in neutral, couldn't get into any gear. There is no grinding noise or any other noises.
When I was pushing on the shifter with the clutch pressed to the floor, as I was trying to get it into gear, the truck would just slightly move,, as if the gears couldn't mesh right. Finally I was able to get it into reverse and then 2nd and drove the last 5 miles to my in-laws shop at 10 mph.. Once I got there and parked the the truck,, the shifter moved easily through all the gears as if nothing was wrong
It has 233,xxx miles on it, I bought it with 190,xxx+ miles and dont know if it's the original clutch or not.
The resovior has fluid in it and has never leaked on me.
Does this sound like a clutch gone bad? Was thinking maybe it has wore down so far that it doesn't engage/disengage completely??
Is there an inspection plate or cover I can remove to get a look at it?
I will tear into it on sunday, just trying some research until then.
Thanks for any replies

If you sit at a sign with your foot on the clutch and in gear, will it keep creeping? I would make a guess at a leaky/bad slave or master cylinder. I'd think a worn clutch would slip and be easy to engage, not hard to engage.
Hard to get into gear, and/or the clutch slowly engages even though the pedal is held to the floor?
You have a bad master cylinder. The fluid is leaking past the check valve and back into the reservoir.

Probably the failing pilot shaft bearing in the flywheel is binding the input shaft - depress the clutch pedal and the shaft keeps spinning = no shiftee. Alternately probably the clutch disk is disintegrating Drop the trans\clutch housing to determine which.
Thanks for all replies!!
I got off cheap on this one. Turns out it was a combination of 2 things that were free to fix.
Checked trans fluid, was full and the oil was clean
I took the shifter off to look in the top of trans at the synchros just to see if I could see anything. When I had it off I noticed that the pivot joint(not sure what it's called) was really stiff and hard to move. I'm talking about the piece the shifter handle screws too, and it bolts to the trans,, actually moves the gears. Anyway.. it just didnt seem right so I took it apart and noticed that some of those washer-type springs had grease on em, some didnt. So I greased the whole thing and put it back on. After that it shifted like it should.
Also, I got to looking at the clutch pedal itself and it seemed out of whack.
The plastic bushing on the clutch pedal itself had worn out some time back. It must have broken completely and fallen out because I couldn't find it anywhere. So I made a bushing out of a piece of copper pipe. Greased everything up and re-installed my pedals.
Shifts perfectly now!
Thanks again for all replies!
