When I had this problem I had read in one of my books that an alternator usually never goes out gradually. They'll go out suddenly. That was my clue to finding out the crankshaft position sensor was going out. The sensor tells the computor that the truck is running, the computor has the voltage regulator inside it, and tells it to start charging. I had my CPS changed out,,and it was solved. This is after two expert highly recommended electrical shops all tried to sell me a new alternator, saying, yep it's dead! What bunch a' horse $#1t.
It was a new diesel tech guy that figured it out for me. Fresh outa' school and worked at the dealer.
