Changed fuel filter, LP leaking ... BADLY!

Changed the fuel filter last night and test drove her ... ran like a top ... no leaks! Went out this morning, started her up, let her idle for a minute or two, to get the fluids circulating. Backed out of the driveway ... "What the hell is that???" Large pool of fluid on the driveway! Investigated to find it was diesel fuel!

Crawled under the truck, while it was running, and noticed a fast and steady drip of fuel running off the starter. Checked the torque on the filter ... perfect! Inspected the LP and found the electrical connector at the base of the pump was wet and leaking ... OUCH!!!

Has anyone heard of this happening?

I bought the truck three weeks ago and decided I should AT LEAST change the fuel filter. The dealer had changed the fluids, prior to me taking possession, but did not indicate a fuel filter change. The old filter appeared dirty. There was a lot of loose particles in the bottom of the canister and the filter was dark purple in color.

Do you think by changing the filter, this caused the LP to fail???? Sounds strange to me, but then again I am not familiar with the workings of a diesel engine.

Cheers,
Andrew

Unfortunately, bought it "as is" because of the mileage.

"Has anyone heard of this happening?"

I have been through several lift pumps. What you are describing sounds like the second one, which was bought from cummins. It developed a leak, diesel ran down around and off the starter. At first I thought in the banjo bolts, but it was out of the bottom of the pump around the electrical fittings.

"Do you think by changing the filter, this caused the LP to fail????"

FWIW I don't think changing the fuel filter would cause the pump to leak.

Good luck

George

Ok, I'm in the midst of installing this thing. Anybody know the torque specs for the banjo bolts and the mounting bolts for the filter canister?

go real easy on those banjo bolts. their easy to break. i would recommend alittel bit past hand tight and tighten as needed after that. not sure about the bolts for the canister. good luck...

Ok, torqued the banjos at 18#, but the washers did not crush ... what's the deal???

I'm using an inch/lb wrench set at 216, which equals 18# ... I'm at a loss!

Do the washers need to crush???

Just tighten them so it doesn't leak. You'll be fine.

Thanks all, I'm just a little spooked working on this diesel engine ... I'm sure I'll get the hang of it!

BTW: Here's a link for anyone who would like the torque specs for their 24 valve

Lift pump is installed ... no leaks!

It appears that she's got better performance, or is it me?

Is there any way to know if I've done damage to the VP? Would the check engine light have come on? I didn't experience any problems with the truck until Sunday, when she had a hard start problem. She acted like she had lost her prime ... guess that would have been due to the LP leaking?

Fingers crossed/knock on wood, I don't have any further fuel issues!

Got a gauge on order from "Geno's", but it won't be here for another week or two.

Does anyone know the flow rate (GPH) of a stock lift pump? I am doing some research and need this information.

Cheers,
Andrew

Andrew,
Take a deep breath and relax, you did good man! The guage will tell you (post filter) that everything is okay until the next LP goes south. The IP is probably okay because it runs so just count yourself lucky and leave it alone.

You might want to look at the FASS HPFP for the next pump. They have a 4 year warranty.
