Carter 4601HP ????
Carter 4601HP ????
My carter 4601hp, bit the dust last week. This pump was giving me around 13 psi at idle.
Anyway I have tried 2 new 4601hp pumps, and the most they will put out is about 8psi at idle
. Has Carter changed something about these pumps. The one that went bad on me was about 2 years old.
thanks.

make sure you are actually getting the HP pumps and not a regular 4601 that sounds like what you are getting because they are 8psi pumps. I ran the 4601hp for a few years at the front of the tank and was very happy with it until it failed i would suggest you now do what i did give up on the carters and go with a walbro 391 or 392 -wow now those are a great pump you will wish you had put one of those on first. You will need to add a separate fuel return line back to the tank and regulate the pressure to the vp44 these pumps really move some fuel and are a much better design.
My Carter P4601HP lasted me 4 months and now it is giving fluctuating readings. It never made more than 8psi (even after I exchanged it from SummitRacing). It's the right stock number on the pump. I'm now trying to find out about the warranty on it. Summit is 90 days and I think all Carter products are 1 year except for their carburators. Anyone have any info? I don't really want to spend $600 for a FASS or Fuel Boss but am tired of messing with this problem.
Been there and done that! The P4601HP Carter pump will not put out NEAR what they advertise. Maybe if you are running 1/4" lines or something , but with a 1/2" line the most I could get was 10 psi.
I didn't plan on this upgrade but I was stranded with a dead LP and a local O'Reillys happened to carry the Airtex unit (I did a write up - search O'Reillys). It is still running strong after a few months. 20psi idle, 15 at 70mph, and 10 at WOT.
The install uses all stock stuff but gets rid of some of the useless hardware and one banjo fitting.
