Trouble Identifying fuel leak.

My buddy has an '01 QC SB. w/ auto so its a standard output and he has some sort of fuel leak. He has put dye in the fuel tank and the whole driver's side of the engine is covered. He says that sometimes at night he can see it steaming coming out the grill. The furthest forward he can find is the VP. He's thinking it's coming from the VP??? He's pulled the cruise and cover and everything off and cleaned everything (fuel delivery lines and feed and return) on the pump and ran it and can't find any leak, but when he puts it all back together and runs it.... LEAKS! Starting to get frustrated w/ it. If it is the VP leaking, is there any way to re-seal it? Anyone have any ideas or anything common w/ these that may cause this? Smoking out the grill made me wonder if there was a cooler for fuel? I know most trucks have a fuel heater but some road tractors and large equipment like Komatsu wheel loaders have a cooler??? I dunno???

Any help is much appreciated,
Ryan

leak

Did you use a black light after the dye was put in? That how the dye works with oil leaks.

I had a fuel leak from one of the high pressure injector lines at the injector inlet. Couldn't tell from looking at it but if you used a lot of brake cleaner and then a paper towel around the VP and lines you can see the leak after the engine runs awhile. If the fuel is leaking under pressure (17,000+psi!) it will look like mist or steam, I would guess. Also, switching to ULSD (which is everywhere now) is a known problem for the old LPs. I think Dodge is recommending changing them out if they start to leak.

Yes, you use a black light to see the dye just like with oil dye.

Yeah.... I would think if it was a high pressure leak you would know it... He says truck seems to run fine... I don't know. According to him its "something on or around the injection pump" so I wouldn't think it would be the lift pump. I just need to get a warm day and look at it with him. He said w/ everything brake cleaned and blown off, it doesn't leak right away at least not anywhere visible but he did say that he can't see the underside of the VP so it could be seeping around a line nut on the bottom side of pump??? Possibility. I'm not sure what else would be under there that could leak. I'm sure the fan is what is blowing it down the side of the engine, thus the dye too.
