Out of no where, my RPM's on my dash dropped to 0 and my check engine light came on, and about 10 sec later they came back up and seemed normal for the speed i was going!! not sure what happened, the knechts guy say my cam shaft center was going bad? how do you replace this and do these really go bad?? not too savy in the diesel world... all the help in much appriciated.

 

Hopefully someone can elaborate or prove me wrong, but for the life of me, I do not remember seeing a cam sensor in my truck or the one other In which I have had the front cover off of. Did a Cam swap for mine and a killer dowel pin on my buddies. our timing system is gear to gear inside a wet sump setup (front cover of the block). I don't think there are any sensors inside there. Come to think of it I have never seen/noticed the sensor that runs the tach on our trucks. The only one I have seen was on the 3rd Big Bad Dodge where he had a Corsa Data Acquisition System and a sensor watching the Fluidampner. Maybe that is where we get our signal.

My 01 did the exact same thing! A new cam position sensor solved it. The sensor is located under the VP44. It's a pain to get at especially if you have big hands! I think mine was held in with a 5mm? allen bolt. I was able to remove the bolt from underneath the truck and then go up top to remove and reinstall the sensor. Put some engine oil or some type of lube on the oring of the new sensor when reassembling. It is a tight fit and getting the sensor pushed back into it's bore was the toughest part of the job for me! 4921597 is the Cummins part #. I got mine from the local Kenworth dealer for about $36. I belive Dodge wanted $120 or so for it! Good luck.

 

hey thanks for the help man!! is there only 1 sensor for the cam?? just wanted to make sure that only 1 needed replacing. did your RPMs come back up when yours did it, or were they off for good? Mine only glitched for a few seconds. thanks again

 

Yup, the 01's only had a cam signal. The earlier trucks used a crank sensor. When mine failed it acted like I let off the throttle for a second. I looked down and saw the engine light on and the tach at 0rpm. As soon as I saw it, the tach jumped back up to 1600rpm or whatever I was running at the time. I want to say the code that came up was PO134 or something like that. That was just over a year ago and probably 30,000 miles, so I would say that the sensor fixed it!

pdftown for the 01 FSM. I think I've seen a crank sensor in the 01 manual also. It is on another machine & I won't check. There is a cam sensor under the VP and the CKP behind the starter on my 00. FWIW, I used a Cummpns CKP for the 1st replacement and aftermarket the last time. I figured that if they were going to keep going out, no sense paying for parts. Only 2 CKPs have failed.

 

No crank sensor on the 01 or 02 VP trucks.

 

Hey I just got my Camshaft sensor.... does it screw in?? it has threads on the part that goes in the bore, and tight fit....ya dont' think my hands are going in there.
