Boost gauge? range?

For my stock 98.5 24v, what range of boost gauge should I choose? I don't plan on any performance mods. Trawling the forums gives me the impression that maximum boost in this configuration won't exceed 35psi, making the 40 pound gauge seem like a good choice.

On a related note, do I even need a boost gauge? Other than telling me if the wastegate is broken, what can I learn from it? I'm installing trans temp and pyro so I know when to back off, and fuel press so I know when to replace parts, but what does boost pressure tell me?

If you're not planning on any mods a 0-40 boost gauge should be plenty. Its nice to have a boost gauge, you can keep an eye on it and try to keep your boost numbers low to improve fuel mileage. If I were already installing the other gauges I'd definately go ahead and put one in. JMO

low boost numbers can also help diagnoise fueling problems, and or that there are boost leaks between the turbo and the intake (ie, loose connections or holes in the boots)

By far the most important gauge is the fuel pressure gauge! all the others are nice to have.

I know your going to stay stock, but the best thing, for over all use and towing would be just the Edge EZ its only 60hp and give the stock truck a very nice boost in get up and go and improves your mileage by a mile or two per gallon, its not going to stress your stock truck, meaning it will still work with all your factory stuff (tranny/fuel pump etc)

actually if your stock you wont see over 20-22psi of boost

Ah, fuel efficiency -- I'd forgotten about that. I sure hope there's a good reason that I only got 13.2 MPG on my first full tank. Now I'm half afraid of what I'll see on the gauges once I get them installed.

My truck only made about 17-18 on boost stock, with the mods in my signature it will make just over 30 now. Stock or mildly modded a 0-40 boost gauge should be fine.

Fuel Pressure Gauge is first. If you lose your lift pump, your VP44 may die is short order, $1,000 for the vP. So, watch your FP all the time.
Exhast Temp is nice to know, to see how hard the engine is working.
Boost shows that the turbo works, and is nice to see how & where it kicks in.

We rarely install or generally sell much less than 60# gauges anymore. Even to the guys that plan on staying stock. All it takes is a touch of power and you'll want a bigger gauge.

I use the 75% rule with mechanical gauges. For a truck making 35 psi, a 40 psi gauge would not be big enough, go to a 60#.

The gauges last longer as they are not out working to their limits.
