Wrong starter??

Well, my stock starter finally gave up the ghost today, so I picked up a nice HD replacement from a local shop with a great reputation. That said...I think they gave me the wrong unit. It looks the same and bolted in the same, but the drive gear doesn't contact the flexplate when energized. Are there different length snouts on the Cummins starters? Just curious...

I'm a big believer in keeping my business local (if at all possible). My guys build great starters and stand behind them, I just got the wrong one by mistake. Any word on different snouts?

what difference does it make, if u have the wrong one u have the wrong one. the only thing that would make it an hd starter is the larger contacts that are $1.25 each. so far i have yet to c a difference in the denso osgr 2.5kw starter. ive rebuilt 5 of them for me and friends and it takes longer to pull them then to rebuild them, and all they ever needed so far was new contacts.imho these starters r built pretty hd to begin with. U might be missing teeth on the plate, or the bendix gear might not be throwing.

The difference is you learn from the situation. It turns out the starter housing was correct, it was just wired to turn in the wrong direction. BTW, there is more to a HD starter than just the large contact points in the solenoid, there are better quality drive motors and bearings available.

like i said before, these starters r hd to begin with, my 99 is on its 2nd set of contacts in 10 years and still going strong, the stock bearing are good enough, its not like they r in constant use where u would need xtra hd bearings, anyway, those bearing r dirt cheap too. some trucks r not negative grounded, possibly why it was wired backwards. I just dont like paying $175 for $5.00 worth of parts, rationalizing it with hd bearings isn't going to cut it either. takes 10min. to change out contacts and plunger. brushes a tad bit longer. any anyone interested in contacts please dont over pay for them get them from http://www.sherco-auto.com/contacts.htm
