Best NV5600 rebuilder in the country? Better synchros available??
Best NV5600 rebuilder in the country? Better synchros available??
I am working up to 200K and my 3rd gear synchros are pretty shot so I am starting to look at getting the 5600 rebuilt and putting a new clutch in. Is there a rebuild shop that everyone uses, preferably on the East Coast? I see them on eBay, but am cautious. I want good work done right the first time and a good warranty. Are there better/upgraded synchros available for these transmissions?
Also, I will likely be putting in an OFE clutch at the same time. My truck is a 2002 4X4 SRW with an EZ box so no major power mods currently or intended--maybe bigger injectors down the road. I daily drive this truck every day and I tow under 10K about half of the time, but may be looking to tow ~15K a little next year so I want to be ready.
Any opinions on what is good or bad is appreciated.
BTW, I did search and did not see anything on what shops people are recommending for the 5600 rebuild so I apologize if this has been covered. Shoot me a link if this is a common question.
THANKS!

In February of 2008, I had my Stock clutch replaced after 185,000 miles with a SB 13" con o kit. I had a noise after installation, which was the pressure plate. A new kit was installed and the noise was gone. However, the shop that did the job swore the tranny imput shaft bearing was bad causing the noise in the bell housing.
The tranny shop in Merritt Island torn it down and found nothing wrong with the NV5600. As you mentioned, the third gear syncro was worn. I have pictures. I don't known were the tranny shop got the parts. The shop that said it was bad ate the teardown. I paid for new bearings and brass.
The 13" SB is much better than the stock clutch. It picked up my fiver really good. I know longer own that truck.
I would recommend the SB. It makes more noise than the stock one at low speeds. Price is not bad for the kit.

The backer plates are what they are as far as I know. The correct fluid is key to longevity of the nv5600. Unfortunately the backer plates are a wear item and can only be replaced by tear down.
My trans guy destroyed the mainshaft and related parts trying to get mine apart so ended up replacing the entire trans with a rebuild. Contrary to popular belief these aren't as hard to get as thought. He had mine the next day.
If you go this route make sure you get the updated case which has the oil passage at the rear to let the fluid all the way to the rear bearing. It is an oval hole if a new casting, there should be a couple 1/2" holes drilled if an older casting. This allows fluid to the rear bearing so you don't have to overfill as suggested by some, however, you can easily get an extra qt in and it doesn't hurt.
I left the havoline stock fluid in it for the year warranty. It shifts a lot smoother than the old one did and the SB clutch is way better than stock. I'm on the west coast but I'm sure somebody back there knows a good shop for you.
Luck, Kurt

They did my 5 to 6 speed conversion in 2000 or 01. 320,000 miles later it still shifts great. As mentioned correct fluid is critical and overfill by 1 qt.
