Angry Getrag Synchros

OK, I'm soliciting tips and tricks from you Getrag experts out there. I KNOW that I'm not the only one to have the springs and ***** pop out of a synchro on a Getrag. How do you get them back together without them bouncing all over the shop?

Thumbs up Very Carefully

I had to sweep the shop three times to find them when I did mine.
I mounted the main shaft vertically in a copper jawed vise and had a helper put the ***** in from the side on top of the springs while I tilted the slider just enough to hold the ***** we had installed in place while he put the rest of them in. I had the helper use the edge of the flat end of a punch. When the last one went in, I snapped the slider down evenly on top of all three, pushing the helper's punch out of the way, and remembered never to move the slider until the gears on both sides of the slider were in position. (And I bought when we were finished).
Took some patience, and when I do it again I'm going to put a shield around the work area so they don't shoot out and bounce all over the floor.

I almost gave up and thought about converting to a NV 4500 so I wouldn't have to (10 blanks) fiddle with them any more.

Hmmm. A helper. Do they sell those at the local parts house?

I didn't have one of those available so mine was a DIY project. On one of them I managed to get a punch pushing down one ball enough to engage the tip of the slider while holding down a second ball with my thumb. Once the slider held the first one in place, while still keeping tension on the slider, I moved the punch over to depress the second ball. I then only partially engaged the slider and put the third cog and ball in the slider depression at the bottom and used a knife to compress the spring down into the cog enough to slip it into it's socket and then quickly but carefully fully engaged the slider. Needless to say, I had to chase those ***** and springs around the shop 10-12 times but fortunately, they do stick to a magnet. Those things are a real pain in the fingers.

The worst time was when I was installing the output shaft into the case and accidentally bumped the 4th gear synchro and it came apart over the transmission. Had to pull it all back out and find the parts and put it back together again and then re-stab the output shaft.

Anyone else have a better trick for doing it on your own?

I used a small pocket screw driver to push the ***** down between the ring and center section. I did like 12valve@heart- I started at one, then got it to hold the ball and spring and then moved around to the other 2. I think I got it by the 2nd or 3rd try.

I now use liberal amounts of duct tape on the end of the mainshaft until the moment I lower it into the tranny for final install. I make sure to grab the pocket bearing instead of the synchro ring.
