Best fuel transfer pump?
After reading a bunch of posts here on the TP issue (thanks, fellas!), I understand that relocating the tranfer pump to the frame is a Good Idea. So, I've ordered the Vulcan kit and will install it at the first opportunity.
The truck has about 50,000 miles on it, and I'm guessing the existing pump is the original. Questions:
Should I replace it while doing the relocation?
What brand pump should I get?
Should I carry a spare? I noticed that several people do.
I will be installing the 'A' pillar guages, including a FP guage.
NO power upgrades are planned, I'm plenty happy with the performance, especially after having my 1994 for about 85,000 miles. I bought the truck in Texas, immediately loaded my VW on a U-Haul car trailer and towed it for about 1700 miles. This past week, I hauled a bunch of logs on a trailer, at least a couple of loads probably exceeded 10,000# w/trailer (guessing). To say that I'm happy with the performance would be an understatement.
TIA: <<Jim>>

You are going to get all kind of opinions on this. Basically it comes down to personal preference and how much you want to spend. I , like many here, went with the Holley blue and a Vulcan big line kit. I got my pump brand new in the box for 85 dollars. You can spend in excess of 500 on an aftermarket pump. So far I am very pleased with the Holley and have about 14 psi dropping to about 12 at WOT. You are going to have to do the research and make your own judgement call on a pump.
What's best? Anything but a Carter replacement. I've had @5 and they seem to last anywhere from 1 minute to 1 year. I took back my final Carter to Oriellys and they replaced it with a "new and improved" design but it won't work with the Vulcan big line/relocation kit I have so now I basically don't have a spare and will probably just get a Holley blue and be done with it...I hope.
I've had the Walbro pump on mine for a few months now and love it. 18-20 PSI at all times. Way cheaper then the FASS and is super quiet.
I went through three stock ones in about a year before the change.
Be sure to install a low pressure warning light or gauges while your at it.

Brad,
Where do you get the Walbro? Is it a bolt-in replacement for the stock pump?
Wurkenman,
Source for the Holley Blue? Is it a bolt-in replacement for the stock pump?
All: Would you replace the original pump now, perhaps keeping it as a spare for the new one?
Thanks!! <<Jim>>

You will not be able to use the stock lp bracket/location if you go with any of the aftermarket pumps, walbro/holley/fass. They all have kits to relocate them to the frame by the fuel tank. All are great options. Holley and the vulcan relocate kit is the least expensive route and it works great.
If you have the cash, I'd go ahead and replace the stocker and keep it as a spare. It's only a matter of time that your going to have to replace it.

Eugene,
I received my Vulcan relocation kit today, will probably do the job in a week or 2. Will the Holley, et. al. fit on the relocated bracket?
Again, do you have any recommended vendors?
Thanks!! <<Jim>>

I got rid of my factory fuel filter canister to cut out all restrictin to the IP, and went with a FASS system. If I had to do it all over again, I think I would have gone with the Walbro pump from Glacier and got a remote mount filter assembly. I think this summer I'm gonna get rid of the factory fuel return line and go with something bigger as well.
