Belt (or Something) Goes Squeaky Squeaky!

when i bought my truck the dealer told me that it is normal and that all the dodge diesels do it because there is so much torque but now i'm just finally getting around to asking about it so here it is. when i shut my truck down and the engine comes to the abrupt stop it usually squeaks (not all the time though) and it sounds like the belt slips just a little bit. so is this actually normal, does anyone else experience this, and was the dealer just messin with me? he said that even the new ones do it so i bought it (his speel that is) but now i'm not too sure. the serpentine belt is tight so maybe there's nothing wrong but i don't know.

just wondering
thanks

Yes that is normal, the mighty Cummins being so high in compression, stops rather abruptly while the alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor etc....are still trying to rotate..Thus you have a small chirp as the belt slips just a little.

Perfectly normal, but doesn't always happen.

Mine use to do it all the time, now with 50K+ on the belt, it does it less and less.

Never gave it a second thought, as I found this site soon after getting my first Diesel.

Just the sound of 500+ foot lbs of torque comingto a sudden stop.
( kinda neat when people look, huh )

Get yourself a Goodyear Gatorback belt and the squeak will go away.

It has absolutely nothing to do with how much (or little) torque the engine is capable of making. Think about it.... I highly doubt your engine is making anywhere near 500 ft-lbs when idling right before you shut it off. It has everything to do with 16 - 17:1 compression ratio stopping the rotation of the crankshaft abruptly while the inertial energy stored in the rotating accessories tries to continue spinning the belt.

But it is still cool..... My dad is more impressed by the way the engine "violently" shakes the truck when I turn it off.

same here! the chatter of the Cummins ussually puts my daughter to sleep in 5 mins or less on a road trip being she is 1 1/2. But when we get to our destination and i shut it down she knows everytime when her car seat shakes a certain way thats its time to wake up were here lol!

+1 on the gator... $39 and 7 minutes fixes the problem.

I've heard the OEM Dayco has been redesigned, but I'm just glad I did not have to sink more money into a tensioner.

Other than the goofy looks you get in the parking lot, its really a normal...

Let's the cat/dog know when you're home (CHRIP!)

alright cool at least i know it normal. thanks guys. maybe when the time comes to change the belt i'll invest in a gatorback. so is that just a brand that is at the local part store?

and mechanos, i'll have to agree with your dad on that one. i love it when the truck shakes when you shut it down

Goodyear makes the gatorback belts... The ribs have cross-cuts, look like a gatorback

I guess good belts are in low demand... Not many parts stores carry the gator around me. Everything is dayco
