Battery connection question

I have been having issues with my tranny shifting in and out of OD for the last month or so. I cleaned contacts on my batteries and found the tranny shifting better but still not correct.
I disconnected both negative cables from the batteries to reset controls and I noticed that the under hood light stayed on. Opened the drivers door and found the same issue.
Is this normal?
I didn't think the batteries should ground through the case.
Thanks for any input.
Ken

i wouldnt think that your batteries should be grouned through your case. Try taking the neg. cables off then turning your key to run postion if anything comes on then your batteries are gounding through your box.

Nevermind, Found the problem.
Hooked up to my car trailer and the emergency brake battery is back feeding to the truck. Pull the trailer plug and lights go out.
