Bad Transmission
Just purchased my 99 2500. Ran beautiful for about a week. On the way to work last friday my auto trans crapped out. Did not want to go into overdrive was the first symptom. When finally came to a stop I had no drive. Left it at work overnight. Saturday I pulled the pan. A lot of hairs in the pan. Upon examination of the filter I realized it was probably clogged. With the help of my transmission friend we decided to pull the trans and overhaul. He is in the process as we speak. Just turned 88k. Thought it was a bit premature...but no history of the previous owner. Any thoughts on this? Needless to say, I was a bit depressed.

Sharp looking truck!

Are you going with some type of aftermarket tranny? Does the truck have any BOMBs on it that may have contributed to the tranny failure? Also, these stock autos are not the greatest... When I was getting my DTT upgrades, they had to rebuild the overdrive gears because they were starting to fail. That was with approx. 14K on the truck!

Tony

Re:Bad Transmission
I am a little new to the diesel world. The only mods I know of on the truck are a Gale banks pwr pack. This includes a ram intake, Monster exhaust, power elbow, and ottomind. They claim doubling the HP and raising torque to 650 ftlb at about 1700RPM. I suppose this is a very mild upgrade compared to some. I spoke to DDT and decide to withhold the expense right now. We are going back to stock. Possibly go with some aftermarket TC. I pull a very light pontoon boat and occasional Tandem Utility trailer. With 3:55's and 315 tires It probably is pretty hard on the trans. We should put it back in over the weekend. My friend is doing this for $600.00 dollars. He does this on the side for a hobby. Most places were talking a least 3 times that for a 4X4.

You need a modified after market TC and valve body or you will just tear out what your buddy just fixed. The stock automatic can not handle anything over stock power for very long. Good luck.

After agreeing with Pit Bull, I suggest you at least up the pressures inside the tranny, if your friend knows how to modify the VB to do it. That's one of the bigger problewms in there, that there's not enough pressure on the TC lockup and other clutch packs to hold the power.
Alternatively, you might order an aftermarket VB. They are only about 400.00. It will help.

Pit Bull and Stamey...you are making me real nervous. I don't how long these mods have been in my truck, but believe this is a original trans. I thought if I could get say 50 or 60k out of this one, I would do a dtt special. Hope I am not making a big mistake. This site is great...so informative!

He is the transmission Guru and should be able to help. You should also call BD and tell them the mods you have ID'ed on your truck and ask them for advise, they might suggest you disconnect somethings until your transmissio mod. BD can also tell you how much HP/Toq you might be putting out, this might help with your conversation with DTT. Hope this helps.

The first clue that the auto trannies are a weak link, is the fact that DC significantly DEtunes the Cummins in the auto trannies - then, when an aggressive owner decides HE knows more than DC, and makes substantial power increases, BOOOOM!

Add to the mix any weekend or saturdy night drags and heavy towing, and you have a recipe for inevitable disaster with a stock transmission and torque converter! That's why many of us with RVs go for the manual trannies - lots more durability, the HO engine, and great flexibility in towing situations.

There ARE time tested and proven improvements available for the autos - and since yours is out and on the ground, now's the time to take a serious look at some of the helpful info up above - or, be prepared to be taking another look at your tranny out on the ground in the not too distant future.

It's a GREAT truck - just a weak, but fixable tranny!
