Lightbulb Automatic To 6-speed Tranny

I was wandering how hard it would be to change from an automatic tranny to a 6 speed tranny and how much would a new 6 speed tranny cost me. Once I put the 6-speed in, I never want to have to change it again. I only pull my tractor about 6 times a year transporting it to some land of mine. Also, while on the subject, a buddy of mine says he'd much rather have the 5 speed tranny, lots less shifting. What does everyone else think? My truck is really just a daily driver, and I like to hot rod quite a bit. Does this make a difference on whether you all would choose the 5 or 6 speed? If I traded out the tranny now while I am having no proplems with the automatic, how much would it be worth? It out of an 01 2500 CUMMINS.

the trans would be worth probably around 500$, i like the 6 speed due to gas mialege and for towing, frankly for "hot rodding" sakes, you would be much better off just getting a DTT trans job done and being "done" with it as well. much easier, keeps the value of your truck, and is a much more fun option. And by the way, you just need to figure, that if you are doing the 6spd swap, you might as well buy a truck from the junkyard becuase you are going to need quite a few parts, i had this problem when i did an auto swap in a mustang gt to a six speed tremec.

The 6 speed would be my first choice for towing, but might be a pain for hot rodding, though I wouldn't mind it . Is this truck a 4x4? That adds to the complication. I am converting a 96 auto to a 5 speed right now, and I just found out the output shafts are different diameters between the auto and the NV4500, so I am in the process of changing the input shaft on the t/case. More expense.
Anyway, good luck.

How much is the DTT tranny job, what does it include, and where can I get it?

Here is a link to DTT's page:

http://www.dieseltrans.com/index.htm

According to their price list, $3,499.00 for the transmission and $975.00 for the torque converter. Not sure what other options you would want. You probably should give DTT, ATS, and the other two (can't remember their names off the top of my head, someone else will chime in and let you know) a call. I prefer a 6 speed, but you would be best off with keeping the auto in this truck, or getting a different truck with the 6 speed already in it. Some people here will tell you otherwise, that you should go ahead and do it, but I disagree.

quad4x4.com has a conversion kit available. It will run you abour $5k.

Production for the nv5600 has ended so if you want one you better get it now or you may not get one at all.

would be cheaper to sell your truck and buy one with the 6 speed.

That conversion kit is for going from five speed to six speed. You would still need a crapload of other parts to do the conversion.

I would just have your automatic fully built... if I could trade my 5sp and clutch for a built auto, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I just got a BOMBed auto installed yesterday. I'd look into it. Was well worth the money. I wanted to do a 6spd swap before too, but this was much faster, easier and cost effective in the long run, for me.
