5-speed to Automatic

Hello,
My GETRAG trans. has been driving me nut and I was wondering if changing to the 727 would be a good idea or not.
Please give me the pros and cons for such a swap. Thanks in advance ;D

If you do any freeway driving, you won't be happy with the 727. It's a good tranny, but without overdrive, you'll be getting about 13mpg at 70 mph (speed limit is 70 in Michigan), maxing out at 80 and about 11-12 mpg. If you only drive 50-55 mph, you may like it.

You are thinking of doing just the opposite of what I wan t to do. I am going to add a 5sp to mine when my auto dies. It was just rebuilt before I bought the truck 2 years ago, so I have a little time left. I tow all the time and just can get more out of the old girl with a stick.

As far as the 727, like was said above. It is a tough tranny, but lacks overdrive. I have the A518 in mine, which is a 727 with a O/D added to it. In my opinon if you really want a auto, I would look for a A518 out of a 91.5 - 93 truck.

Also I am not sure what all goes into switching from a manual to a auto, but I am sure it is more involved than the other way around. Because of the necessary wiring harness and such.

Re:5-speed to Automatic

The 5 speed you have, your rear gears would be at least 3.54. With 3.54 gears 31" tall tires and a 727 auto trans your top speed would be less than 65mph. That is if your gov is still at stock setting witch is about 2500 engine rpm. You would need some sort of an overdrive to be happy. My truck has the 727, but is factory and all of them came with 3.07 gears. Even with 3.07s an overdrive on the highway running empty would be nice. My truck does fine at 70 though as I get 20 mpg with summer fuel 22mpg if I drive 65.

Hey Paul,
how do you like not having a muffler? Does it sound the same until you give it throttle? Where does the end tube come out?

Re:5-speed to Automatic

Hey Don, I love the sound of my exhaust without the muffler. It is a little louder at idle but when I give it fuel the truck sounds like a BIG RIG ;D. The tail pipe comes out behind the rear tire. Oh did I mention that I love it.
Thanks for all of the responses guys. I think i will look for a good used A518 tranny.

First off overall I do like it. I bought the truck the way it is so I have nothing to compare it to other then other peoples stock exaust. The exaust exits behind the rear wheel. Yes it is louder than stock. At a cruise it is not bad. I hear the engine more that the exaust, but when I stomp on it it kinda has a little bark to it. I do not tow much so I am going to leave it the way it is, but if I towed every day I would put some sort of muffler on it..
