ATF type after rebuild

I'm in the middle of a rebuild of my 47RE and have installed Alto Red Eagle clutches. I talked to the manufacture and they said I could run dexron/mercon oil and even 10w hydraulic oil. I don't like the price of ATF+4 oil. Has any one run anything different than +4?

just put my new one in and was told the Torque Converter still needed ATF+3/4. I couldnt get any +3, so I opted for the +4 again

i HAVE BUILT SEVERAL OF THESE TRANS FOR MY SELF AND OTHERS. and have consistently found much less debris in the pan botom on fluid changes with atf+4 than with any other fluid

For cripes sake put the +4 in it and be done with it. Your question should be for the converter manufacturer. Thats more of a concern for the converter clutch than the transmissions clutches.

Off topic I had a guy come in for a cheap front mounted hitch to put his boat in the lake. He was a bent out of shape looking for a discontinued bass pro shop hitch he previously bought. When I told him his logic was a little off he barked whys that. I said how much is your bass boat. He replied its a tournament special edition that he stole for 35,00.00 and it sold new for twice that. I responded you have a 70 grand boat and you want to launch it with a 12 dollar hitch thats just plain being a fool.

Goerend recommends Dexron in his trannys so that's what I put in one of his. Works great so far....

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
The additive benefits of atf+4 are greater than price especially if buying a speciality oil anyway... The high temp capibilities and clutch benefits alone are worth the purchase.

You're rebuilding the trans and are reluctant to spend the $$ on fluid? Seems like the objective would be finding the best fluid to use long term.

Dexron III/Mercon isn't a full synthetic synthetic, ATF+4 is. That's why it's $4.50 a qt. If they recommend Dexron over ATF+4, go with a full synthetic. Otherwise, run the ATF+4.

I put in a DTT T/C because my factory T/C burned out. Farm Boy's Diesel recommended Dexron/Mercon III for solider shifts and less slippage in my heavy duty app. I run 12500 lbs empty - no problems. This was a valve body/converter change only using the rest of the trans as is a couple years ago.

Well, I said, "Dave, what should I run in your/my brand new $5000 transmission?" To which he replied, "Dex/Merc is fine." And I retorted, "Really, not ATF+4?" His reply was, "Any Dex/Merc will work fine in my transmissions and that's what I recommend." Expert testimony. Case closed. Now I run Dex/Merc in his trans/converters....
