Atf Fluid

I was reading - Auto Transmissions Explained and it said that you can run hydraulic oil instead of ATF. I have a 2001 ram and it takes Mopar type 4.
What types of hydraulic oil can I run. TSO 10w or 30W, AW32 or 46? I think the oil is going to need friction modifiers. Any one use Hydraulic oil?

so what's cheaper ATF+4 or a rebuilt trans?
I wouldn't take that chance and stick with the ATF.

ATF is, by far, the most complicated blending formula of any vehicle lubricant. I would not pick that as a place to cut cost!

That being said... the only hydraulic fluid that would possible work is some brand of Tractor Hydraulic or Hy/Tran Fluid.
These fluids use to work well in older trannys but most only meet Dexron II specs and don't come close to ATF 4 requirements.

They will work but will shorten the life of your tranny and may not shift very well (never tried it and wouldn't advise it).

Gus at Farmboy's Diesel recommended Dexron MerconIII for my truck as I am always running heavy, put in a new converter and VB. He said it doesn't slip as much as the new fluid and woulld give solider shifts to keep from burning out clutches etc. I previously burned out the factory T/C lockup clutch-replaced T/C only per his recommendation. Worked great - saved thousands - still running strong at 12000 gross load on steep mountain roads.

Gus races 785 HP daily driver 2nd gen.

ATF is not a fluid I think you want to experiment with. ATF+4 is a synthetic, so just drain refill with that, and you will be good.

My 2001 calls for ATF3 in the factory book. Topped up my xfr case last night after a leak at the drain plug.
