Anyone help with egt problem

Went camping over the Fourth weekend and a friend let me use his camper. It weighed about 6200#. I have an 01 six speed that is pretty much stock but took everyones advice on the forum and installed guages (Autometer- boost,fp,egt pre-turbo) also have K&N cold air intake and superchips micro tuner. FP held up great ALL the time. Ambient temp. was 85-90 and was running air but made no difference if air was off. Stock setting pulling a hill 18-20 boost, egt 1000-1200 but would not exceed 1200 and would drop from70mph to 63mph WOT. Tow safe setting pulling a hill had more power and more boost but could not use it cause egt would go right to 1250 and beyond if you kept your foot in it. and again could not mantain 70mph. Power was even better in perf. tow but same egt problem. pulled a coupple really big hills that by the time I crested I was down to 50mph trying to mainain 1250 and under. 6200# is not that heavy and should pull it with ease and not have these temps. My friend who was with me has a powerstroke and gave me crap the whole 800 mile trip. that's just wrong, and to top it off only got 10-11 mpg.

ok sence you have the tuner I don't think it has a boost fooler so what where the boost #'s on the higher settings and if there where the same 18-20 then you need more air (boost) to cool the EGT's as when I had the Hypertech stacked with my Dcomp off I could see 30 psi with a boost elbow and if it is an auto you will need a J-hook thingy instead of the boost elbow but in order to run the higher psi you will need a fooler for the ECM so that it don't set codes

I'd suggest an Edge EZ with boost elbow and returning the ECM to stock programming. The EZ has a built-in boost fooler. With this combo when I was running stock injectors, I'd see 30 PSIG boost and 1100 degF maximum pre-turbo EGTs towing our previous 13,500 lb 36' 5th wheel. It's a nice towing box.

If you want to spend more money for future power increases and on-the-fly adjustability, you can go for the Edge Comp instead of the EZ.

I second the need for more boost... 20-22 PSI isn't going to be enough...

I was pulling a car trailer down to Boise and never seen more than 1,100*F in EGT's. That with the trailer empty and returning back with a 1972 Chevy Pickup "Longhorn". Now the EGT rose a bit more to 1,200*F but that it. I really did good on that trip... 17.47 MPG for a 360 miles round trip.

Rustyjc, Just bought a new house and on a limited budget for awhile. Can I help my problem with a boost elbow and fooler. That's probably a little more closer to what I can afford right now? Also, will 4" exhaust help lower my egt's over stock exhaust?

Yes... To a point...

I would opt for the the cheap method for the time being... Straight pipe. IMO

Yep, that would certainly help.

The 4" exhaust will not be a substitute for the appropriate amount of boost for the level of fueling. Even when you have the right boost psi, don't expect a massive drop in egt when towing heavy in the hills. A stocker can 1250 working hard on a grade.

A boost fooler is much less money than a 4" system anyway but it is always a good idea - just get the boost fooler first.....you will pick up some power, drop some egt and maybe even get a slight mileage increase when towing.

Straight pipe (resignator remains) dropped mine by 150 degree on grade at WOT above 1500 RPM. That and the fooler should help.
