Finally happened!!!

Dead VP44!!!

Went to the desert with my quads and trailer. Hauled everything out just fine then when we atarted back, Dead peddle!! Let off the gas went OK just like it has a couple of other times thne it did it again. Went on like this for about 70 miles.
If I push in the clutch and shift gears up or down problem went away for a while. Then back it comes Dead peddle and no boost!! It was horrible, and the worst thing was having to call my Stepdad to come and haul my trailer in the last 60 miles with his Powerjoke !!

I am gonna call the Cummins shop here in Reno and get a quote to do the VP and an adjustment on the valves. The truck has 160000 on her.

What can I expect for true prices?? I have seen anything from 1800 to 30000 ?????? for the VP. How much should the valve adj. cost??

I am just sick about this, the only saving grace is my wife who just gave up her new hardwood floors so I could get my truck back!!

I cant address the prices for you.
However, if you plan on doing this yourself (installation of the pump), then when you call, ask for Gabe in parts.
If you want them to do the install, ask for either Brian or Kat. They are all great to work with and should be able to give you a rough idea on the cost to do both the pump install and the valve adjust.

Good folks up there at the Cummins shop.

Rich.

Why pay labor? Niether of these jobs are all that tough, you could knock em both out in a day. A vp reman runs about $1000. Cumminsstuff.com

They are good folk there.
Yes, expensive, but I have never been treated poorly and they have always made things right with me.

They were pretty busy in there today, but sounds like I can get it back before the end of the week. I already like them more than the other option (The Dealer), I would rather burn my truck to the ground than take it there!!!!!!!

Thanks for the encouraging words Rich

Well, Kat called me when I was sleeping yesterday and quoted me 3100.00 for the VP and valve adjustment!! Hopefully they will have it back by the end of today, but she was not sure.

That truck better run like a raped ape when I get it back! It just cost me my new Polaris Sportsman 800 I had my eye on, wife rethought it and is not giving up her floors now.

$3100 sounds right for a VP and Valve lash adjustment at a Cummins shop. The VP is priced around $1500 and the labor will be about $500. That's around what mine cost me when I got stuck in southern Oregon.

Yes, having the work done by Cummins will always be expensive.
The pump is priced at $1800.00 and will probably take 6 to 8 hours in labor.
Im sure Kat will be willing to work with you on that price to some degree.
The pump comes from Re-Con.
(I believe thats a branch of Cummins Corp and are all built to factory spec).

The guys at the Cummins shop will put the pump on in stock condition. The truck should not run any better/worse than it did new.

An idea you may want to check into is becoming a member of Rocky Mountain Cummins Power Boosters. This may save you money next time. PM me for details and contacts numbers.

Kat, Brian and Steve will take care of you and you'll know the work is done right (at least to factory specs).

Got the truck back today. First thing I noticed was the amount of low end power I have been missing!! It would always pull hard once the boost came up but now it seams like it pulls harder and spools up faster.
Second thing was the lack of the hi pitched pinging I was noticed. That was because of the valve lash adjustment I am sure.
Third thing was how great the guys at Cummins Rocky Mountain were! Very nice and great to deal with. Kat and Brian were a real pleasure to deal with and I will be going back.
DieselDaze turned me on to the Cummins Rocky Mountain Power Boosters and it saved me over 300.00 just on this repair. I would highly recomend anyone who gets there parts and service through Cummins to join. It is well worth it!!

Well, I figure now it will either be the tranny or clutch, seems like it always goes like that!!
