I want to replace the drive shaft on my 02 extended cab long bed 4x4. Is it reasonable to put a one piece on instead of the factory 2 piece?

Where would I get a one piece drive shaft?? It looks like 71 1/8 center to center on the u-joints.

Custom driveline shop can make it for you.

Maybe ask in the performance/accessories section.

 

A 6 foot long shaft is probably over the limit on length. I forget what the length is now but I am pretty sure it was under five feet. The problem is harmonic vibration, a shaft that long can start to whip and break the u-joints.

Subscribing to this thread as I would like to put a 1pc in my 01 as well. tired of the carrier bearing issues I have had over the years. I know you see third gen threads going to 1pc shafts cant be mcuh if any shorter than the 2nd gens can they.

 

It has been a long time since I had my 4X4 shop and I dealt with steel shafts back then. I have seen some pretty long aluminum shafts on Ford vans but they are HUGE. If you are off roading I would imagine an aluminum shaft would ding pretty easily and I also am not sure what kind if torque they are rated at. The easiest way to find out is to call a driveline shop and ask. I can tell you that when I wanted to have one built for my Ford they would not do it due to length issues. That is a diesel supercab 8 foot bed so it has to be close to the same length.

Now this is a real problem. I just tried to change the rear ujoint and when pressing the ujoint out the one side galled and is pretty messed up.
